Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Virginia Tech
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions effective August 2010. One of these positions is geared towards a faculty member who will contribute to the Department's Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program (CEM); the other position is geared towards a faculty member who will contribute to the Department's Structural Engineering and Materials Program (SEM). A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely aligned field is required. The positions are anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Professor rank, however junior Associate Professor level appointments may be considered for outstanding candidates. Candidates with specific research expertise in resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure systems are particularly encouraged to apply. The CEE Department currently has 46 faculty members, with approximately 350 full-time graduate students and 700 undergraduate students. The $15 million Via Endowment allows the Department to offer a significant number of scholarships and fellowships to highly qualified students.
A successful candidate in the area of Construction Engineering and Management will be able to teach mainstream CEM subjects as well as introduce graduate courses in the candidate's area of research expertise. A successful candidate in the area of Structural Engineering and Materials will have a sound fundamental knowledge in the analysis, behavior, and design of steel structures. Exceptional candidates with expertise in other areas could also be considered.
