Summary The San Francisco County Transportation Authority has graduate student intern positions for students, recent graduates who are self-motivated, detail-oriented, and excited about making a meaningful contribution to San Francisco's transportation system. Internships may also be appropriate for career changers interested in exploring transportation planning and/or travel demand modeling.
Due to the size of our agency and our dedication to learning from each other, interns will have the opportunity to interact with professionals at all levels within the Transportation Authority from peers to the senior managers. Transportation Authority staff will work with each intern to develop a program that is tailored to his/her individual strengths and interests, as well as the current needs of our team. Technology, Data and Analysis Division graduate student interns perform tasks and assist in areas related to transportation analysis and travel behavior modeling. Under the general supervision of Technology, Data and Analysis staff, interns assist with the duties and responsibilities listed below, which are characteristic of the range of duties and responsibilities assigned to this position, and are not intended to be a comprehensive listing. Internships are paid and can be combined with general research opportunities or research towards a thesis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Assists with development of San Francisco’s activity-based travel demand and dynamic traffic assignment models • Uses the Transportation Authority’s current modeling suite to help answer a variety of planning questions • Researches and applies new analytical techniques to enable the Transportation Authority planners to confidently address a wider range of planning questions • Manages and analyzes a variety of data • Summarizes and presents data and model results • Performs related duties as required and assigned

Availability Interns should be available to work at least 20 hours per week (maximum 40) during regular business hours, for at least a 12-week period of time. (Full time is also possible).
Minimum Qualifications Strong interest in travel forecasting and urban transportation planning is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and other standard office productivity software.
Skills and Abilities Understanding of standard transportation planning principles, methods and processes, basic research methods, survey design, and database management techniques. Ability to interpret data using appropriate statistical methods, familiarity with basic travel demand modeling and traffic engineering principles. Strong written and oral skills; ability to prepare and present written reports and recommendations. Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in working with members of the general public; and interact effectively with Transportation Authority Board members, other government officials, professional and technical colleagues and staff.
Training and Experience Proficiency with computer programming, mapping and spatial analysis (e.g. using ArcGIS), database management, statistical analysis, and experience with transportation planning and analysis software is desired. At least one semester in a relevant graduate level discipline (e.g. transportation planning, urban planning, civil engineering) is required, but experience or education in other fields that use similar methods (e.g. mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science) and a strong motivation to learn about and contribute to data-driven transportation planning may be substituted for relevant graduate coursework.
