The Southern Georgia Regional Commission is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Regional Transportation Planning Technician (Intern). This position involves interaction with local governments throughout an 18-county region. Position is responsible for assisting Regional Transportation Planners and other staff with assistance to member local governments in transportation planning and other regional planning activities.
Major Duties: Candidate will be assisting regional planners in carrying out the following duties among other tasks that may be assigned.
Prepare updates to websites and social media outlets
Prepare agendas and attend meetings and take minutes of various committees and councils to provide assistance with or prepare various transportation plans, reports and documents
Tifton Pedestrian Connectivity Study, Fitzgerald Bicycle Plan
Assist GIS staff is developing databases for spatially located data features
Examples: Truck Routes, Signage, Right-of-Way, etc.
Assists other planners with transportation and comprehensive planning projects as requested
Examples: Transportation Vision Plan, Transit Development Plans, Land Use Plans, Bicycle Pedestrian Plans, Annual Crash Report, etc.
Maintains the transportation database and filing system
Assists Mobility Manager to maintain computer databases and ensure that client transportation requests are fulfilled in a timely manner
Performs administrative duties (filing, answering phones, etc.) and other tasks as requested
Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of public administration and government jurisdiction interrelationships
Skill in graphic design and communication is desired

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Transportation and Environmental Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor reviews completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include various local government Comprehensive Plans, Unified Land Development Codes, Department of Community Affairs Minimum Standards for Comprehensive Planning and Solid Waste Planning, and other applicable state and federal codes and laws. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application of relevant contracts, and SGRC/Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Planning Organization procedures, roles and responsibilities.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied duties in planning, coordination, and administration. The volume of work contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this assignment is to provide professional planning support for member governments and assist with other transportation and land use planning activities. Successful performance contributes to an improved quality of life for area residents within the region and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of member governments, relevant state and federal agency officials, and the general public.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:
Senior Undergrad or Master’s/Doctoral Degree candidate from a field of study related to regional planning (communications, business, sociology, public administration, planning, rural studies, etc.).
Preferred candidates will have experience in website design/maintenance, especially Section 508 Compliance, if candidate may be trained with this skill, depending on staff availability.
Successful candidate must have excellent ability to produce written narrative, be a self-starter, and be willing to work in teams. Candidate should have excellent computer skills, including those needed for social media networking. Successful candidate should be familiar with the SGRC and our transportation activities found on our website at www.sgrc.us.
This is a temporary, hourly position, based in our Valdosta office. This position is temporary for a minimum period of 4 months (September 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017) that may be extended, based on performance, available funds and agency workload. This position is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) position. However, we are willing to reduce time requirements to work with students who may have classes.
