Among US federal laboratories are: US Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, US Army Research Laboratory, US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, US Military Academy, US Chemical and Biological Defense Funded Laboratories, US Edgewood Chemical Biological Center, US Air Force Research Laboratory, US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, and many others

The National Research Council of the National Academies will offer awards four times annually for independent graduate, postdoctoral and senior research to be conducted in residence at US federal laboratories and affiliated institutions.  Awards encompass all areas of science and engineering, including civil engineering.  Awards include stipends ranging from $45,000 to $80,000 for recent PhD recipients and higher for additional experience, relocation, professional travel and health insurance.  Entry level graduate stipends begin at $30,000 per year, and are higher for additional experience.  Detailed information, including instructions for submitting online applications are at www.nationalacademies.org/rap  Applicants should contact prospective Adviser(s) at the lab(s) prior to the application deadline to discuss their research interests and funding opportunities.
