The Mission of Portland’s Bureau of Development Services is to promote safety, livability, and economic vitality through efficient and collaborative application of building and development codes.
The City of Portland's Bureau of Development Services is seeking a Senior Engineering Associate – Geotechnical. This position performs intermediate to advanced professional project management, specialized engineering or developer/building plan reviews; applies advanced technical engineering knowledge to the solution of design, construction, improvement and maintenance problems pertaining to the City's infrastructure and private development; carries projects through from inception to completion, manages several projects at once and/or manages a complex project in a specialty field. Incumbents may oversee, coordinate and review the work of support staff and technicians. The current vacancy is in the Engineering Plan Review Team. This team is responsible for providing review of development permit applications including construction plans, specifications, engineering calculations and geotechnical engineering reports for structures, retaining walls, grading, private streets, and other development to ensure development complies with applicable codes and regulations, and standards of practice.
The work also includes:
- Evaluating site conditions and potential geologic hazards, conducting research, analyzing and interpreting site data;
- Determining whether geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and/or seismic hazard reports are required;
- Conducting site inspections of development sites and construction activities for compliance with permit requirements; and
- Reviewing development permit applications for compliance with erosion control and floodplain development regulations.
The position will use independent judgment; work collaboratively with architects, engineers, contractors, developers and citizens to resolve development issues, and assist in the development of policies, standards and codes related to the civil and/or geotechnical aspects of development. The Geotechnical Senior Engineering Associate will meet the Bureau's expectations of providing excellent customer service in an equitable manner to meet the needs of the City of Portland's community.
