The Civil Engineering Associate I/II/III is a flexibly-staffed position. Incumbents, under supervision, perform increasingly complex and independent civil engineering work; and perform other related work as required.
May be hired at any level, depending on certification, qualifications, and work experience.
The Civil Engineering Associate I - $4786.79- $5818.36 - Entry-level in the series and incumbents are required to perform work applying standard techniques and procedures to a variety of engineering tasks.
The Civil Engineering Associate II - $5,065.66 - $6,157.34 - Working level position in the job class. Incumbents perform fully skilled professional engineering work in the review, design and inspection of public works engineering projects; work under general supervision; considerable latitude is permitted in approach to assignments with predetermined department and engineering standards.
The Civil Engineering Associate III - $5,626.83 - $6,839.44 - Journey-level of a flexibly-staffed position. Incumbents work independently with responsibility for a total project, or part of a major project; work is of a difficult nature and incumbents make recommendations to superiors concerning complex engineering problems. Employees in the III level are eligible to receive a 5% pay incentive for active registration in California as a professional engineer in civil engineering (sal. $5,908 - $7,181/month).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from college with major study in civil engineering or possession of an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the State of California; OR possession of a Professional Engineer Registration or a Professional Land Surveyor registration in the State of California.
In addition to above, Civil Engineering Associate I: One (1) year of entry-level professional civil engineering work, including experience in surveying and the basics of public works design.
In addition to above, Civil Engineering Associate II: Two (2) years of professional experience at the Civil Engineering Associate I level or equivalent with some project management experience.
In addition to above, Civil Engineering Associate III: Two (2) years of professional experience at the Civil Engineering Associate II level or equivalent, one (1) year of which includes project management experience.
CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: EIT OR LSIT Certification or PE License from the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Substitution - One (1) year of professional experience may be substituted for one year of college course work in civil engineering.
LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of a valid and appropriate California driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles, practices and methods of civil engineering as applied to the planning, designing and construction of streets, water, sewer and public works systems; operation of survey projects; engineering mathematics; and English grammar and word usage.
Prepare accurate plans, specifications, cost estimates and engineering reports; understand and carry out technical instructions; make accurate engineering computations and drawings; maintain engineering office records and files; write technical reports; operate a vehicle, observing legal and defensive driving practices; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
