The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Maricopa, Arizona, seeks applicants for a permanent, full-time Supervisory Research Soil Scientist/Research Agronomist/Research Agricultural Engineers/Research Physical Scientist (Research Leader). Incumbent will provide technical and program leadership to a multi-disciplinary team, supervise and mentor scientists, manage fiscal and physical resources, and foster research excellence towards improving sustainability, productivity and profitability of U.S. agriculture in arid agroecosystems (GS 14/15; $112,801 to $172,490 annually plus benefits).

  • Personal research should complement existing team with field and/or laboratory-based research to develop sustainable water management practices/technologies and new germplasm for agricultural and urban landscapes, that increase water use efficiency, nutrition management, agricultural productivity, reuse of wastewater, and ecosystem services in arid environments.

Research could include one or more of the following: develop decision support tools that optimize water and nutrient use efficiencies;

  • Developing management tools that optimize water and nutrient use efficiencies; developing irrigation management tools that conserve water; developing safe practices for using reclaimed wastewater for irrigation; developing remote and proximal sensing tools for spatial assessment of evapotranspiration (ET), drought/heat stress, and plant nitrogen (N) status at field scales; evaluating ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, soil salinity dynamics and soil health from cropping and turf
  • Directly supervising, evaluating and mentoring research scientists and technicians. Utilizes communication skills and team building to manage the Unit's fiscal, physical, and human resources.
  • Develops and maintains productive interactions with a variety of research partners, customers, and stakeholders. Represents USDA and ARS on all matters related to the Unit's mission and research programs. Research is conducted in support of ARS National Program 211, Water Availability and Watershed Management and National Program 215, Grass, Forage, and Rangeland Agroecosystems.
