Director, Advanced Structural Engineering Laboratory

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering at Auburn University invites applicants for the Director of the Advanced Structural Engineering Laboratory (ASEL).  ASEL is a newly constructed, 41,500-square-foot, $22 million laboratory that includes a high-bay laboratory with specially engineered floors and walls capable of handling extreme loads; a 4,700-cubic-foot geotechnical test chamber located within the strong floor; a concrete materials research and testing laboratory; an extreme wind loads testing facility, and includes approximately 2,500 square feet of office and collaboration spaces for faculty and graduate students. ASEL operates within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and its researchers are also charged to work with other affiliated research and education centers across the University. 

The ASEL Director is expected to provide leadership to ASEL while maintaining an externally funded research program featuring large-scale structural engineering experimental work. The ASEL Director will also provide undergraduate- or graduate-level instruction and engage in university and professional service commensurate with research and ASEL Director responsibilities.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenured or tenure-track faculty member in the area of structural engineering at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, or a non-tenured Professor of Practice commensurate with background, qualifications, and experience.

The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering fosters practical, interdisciplinary research, and emerging innovations that support the infrastructure needs for sustainable economic growth and exceptional quality of life in the 21st Century.  The college’s 2020-2021 enrollment was 6,582 students including 5,579 undergraduate and 1,007 graduate students in 9 departments.  The college has 195 tenure/tenure track and 55 non-tenure-track faculty with $72.9 million in research expenditures and is ranked 29th in the country for public engineering colleges. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has 25 tenure/tenure-track faculty and 11 non-tenure track faculty specializing in seven sub-areas of civil engineering with 545 undergraduates and 127 graduate students enrolled in 2020-2021.
