Instructor, Civil Engineering

The Civil Engineering Program at the University of Portland (UP) seeks a non-tenure track instructor to join a thriving community of educators for the 2022 - 2023 academic year.  We encourage applicants with an enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and an ability to teach lecture and/or laboratory courses in a range of possible engineering areas:  introductory and general engineering courses, mechanics, surveying, geotechnical engineering, infrastructure planning, water and environmental systems, technical writing, or engineering data analysis.

Through small classes and labs, the CE program offers an accredited BSCE degree, engaging students in the abilities, mindset, and knowledge for successful careers, service to the community, and graduate school.  This is an ideal environment for educators who are passionate about teaching and working in a student-centered community where a professional education is infused with the liberal arts. The curriculum includes active learning, hands-on collaborative projects, and a capstone project with industry partners, with opportunities for undergraduate research. Civil engineering classes are approximately 20 to 30 students, with smaller laboratory sections.

This is an annual appointment with the option to teach through the summer and benefits.  Benefits include:  medical & dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and sick time.  (Please note that eligibility for all University benefits is subject to applicable policies, practices, and requirements.)

Responsibilities:

The expected teaching commitment is 12 credit hours (typically four courses) per semester for two semesters in a full-time, 9-month (August-May) position. Teaching summer courses is available, but optional. It is likely that all instruction will be in-person.

In addition to undergraduate classroom/laboratory teaching and preparation, general duties may include (but are not limited to) managing and mentoring undergraduate graders and teaching assistants, holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, collect accreditation course data, preparing course materials, and maintaining course websites.

Mentor and advise students on capstone projects (projects are counted toward the teaching commitment).

Requirements:

• Required: Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field at the time the position will start (August 2022).
• Required: Teaching experience in a minimum of one of the areas listed above.
• Required: Lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity & inclusion work within or transferable to higher education.

There is no research workload or expectation associated with this teaching position.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred:

• Bachelor degree in civil engineering or a related major.
• Broad background in civil engineering knowledge.
• Engineering experience and/or professional licensure.
• Evidence of effective course development and teaching at the university level.
• Training or experience in engineering education.
