The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in the area of Advanced Manufacturing. The appointment is open to all ranks (Assistant, Associate, or Professor level), and begins in the 2022 academic year. This position is targeted to fulfill part of a coordinated team hiring effort that spans multiple departments across the College of Engineering for a new initiative focused on future manufacturing and construction engineering. Of particular interest are candidates with expertise that can integrate strongly with a well-established interdisciplinary team of faculty focused on research at the convergence of Industry 4.0 technologies. The priority area of hiring for this position is in research areas that contribute to the future of manufacturing. Specific research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: cybermanufacturing, physics-informed machine learning, digital twin methodologies, smart sensing for manufacturing, additive and hybrid manufacturing, high-performance materials processing, and design optimization for manufacturing.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (http://www.me.vt.edu/), which includes a Nuclear Engineering Program, has 68 faculty, 33 affiliate faculty, annual research expenditures of over $18M, and a current enrollment of about 140 doctoral student,140 Master students, and nearly 1200 undergraduate students. The Department is ranked 17th (10th in public schools) and 17th (9th in public schools) out of all mechanical engineering departments in the nation in undergraduate and graduate education, respectively, by the 2021 U.S. News and World Report.

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in engineering or a closely related field, a strong record of academic accomplishments and a proven ability to work collaboratively; experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges. The successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and developing a strong externally sponsored research program. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check as well as documentation of COVID-19 vaccination or receive approval from the university for a vaccination exemption due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief.
