We have immediate vacancies for the position of Engineering Technician/Senior Engineering Technician. The current vacancies are in the Public Works Department – Transportation Section and Land Development Division. The Engineering Technician/Senior Engineering Technician works under general supervision and is responsible for performing a variety of paraprofessional office and field engineering work in one of the following areas: capital improvements (design), construction and survey, land development, traffic engineering, water and wastewater, or street maintenance services.

This classification is flexibly staffed, and the position may be filled at either level depending on the qualifications of the incumbent and the staffing needs of the city.

Transportation Section Vacancy

Conducts traffic counts and surveys to record a variety of data, including traffic patterns, traffic speed, and traffic volumes on designated City streets, roadways, and intersections. Compiles, summarizes and evaluates data generated by traffic surveys and investigations including traffic crash reports; makes recommendations to supervisor on possible alternative solutions to existing problems regarding traffic flow. Prepares and updates inventory of signs and signals throughout the City.  Issues road work bulletin to the media to alert the press about possible congestion resulting from road projects. Prepares work orders, implements signing and striping changes. Answers the telephone and handles citizen requests regarding traffic concerns and problems. Periodically conducts "radar" traffic studies to determine traffic speed levels and to evaluate signing requirements.   Performs drafting assignments by using AutoCAD to include the design of striping plans, parking lots, lights and signals, and street lighting; provides cost estimates and quantity take-offs for same.   Assists in public, utility companies, contractors, developers, and other City departments in regard to traffic-related matters, such as projected volumes, signing requirements, striping plans.

The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge and background in Geographic Information Systems along with experience developing and maintaining an asset management system. This person will have the ability to utilize GIS applications for the purpose of data collection and work management. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the ability to conduct field inspections related to inventorying and condition assessment for such things as sidewalk, curb and gutter, access ramps, traffic signs, and roadway pavement striping.

Land Development Division Vacancy

Assists the public, private engineers, and developers by explaining City Engineering Division practices, policies, and procedures. Provides information relative to the location of sewer, water lines, and storm drains. Answers questions regarding problems and provides information to developers and realtors on needed public works improvements for development sites. Performs plan checks and permits for public works aspects of utility, residential and industrial building plans to ensure conformance with necessary right-of-way City standards. Collects data and performs field investigations to obtain necessary data for the completion of a project or to answer questions of the public or private engineers needing information on engineering records, maps, and files. Performs miscellaneous research to update tract and parcel maps indicating where fees have been paid and to gather data to answer public service questions.

The ideal candidate for this position has previous agency permitting experience, a background in construction and skilled in the modern use of computers including permitting software, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and MS Teams. 

Salary and Benefits

The City offers a total compensation package that includes both a generous salary plus excellent benefit! Salary: $26.21 - $35.02 Hourly DOQ.

Qualifications

Engineering Technician: A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of high school supplemented by college level courses in computer-aided drafting, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), engineering, or mathematics, and one year of experience in drafting, surveying or another area specifically related to civil or traffic engineering are required. An Associate of Arts in an engineering-related field is preferred.

Senior Engineering Technician: In addition to the requirements of Engineering Technician, 18 months of paraprofessional engineering experience equivalent to that of an Engineering Technician with the City of Ventura is required.

License: Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver license may be required.

Certificate

  • When assigned to the Engineering Services/Survey Division, possession of a valid Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certificate is desirable.
  • When assigned to Engineering Services, possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate is desirable.
