Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION

The Civil & Environmental Engineering (CE/ENVE) Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in Environmental Engineering. Candidates with diverse teaching and research interests are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate how their background addresses contemporary environmental engineering concerns related to bioremediation, resource recovery, air quality, or solid/hazardous waste. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is available starting Fall 2022.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: (a) teaching undergraduate classes and laboratories in environmental engineering in general as well as graduate courses in an area of specialization. The ability to teach courses in more than one sub-specialty (bioremediation, solid/hazardous waste, air, or engineering fundamentals such as thermodynamics or mass transfer) is preferred; (b) supervising undergraduate and graduate-level research; (c) developing and maintaining externally-funded research programs; (d) collaborating with other faculty on curricular, research and professional development interests; (e) engaging in activities related to service in the form of student club advising, curriculum development, and shared governance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for the position are required to have earned undergraduate and doctorate degrees in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or a related field by the time of appointment.

Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required. 

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in environmental engineering, supported by a record of scholarly publications, is preferred. Professional registration, LEED certification, and industry/consulting experience are desirable. A commitment to innovation in undergraduate teaching and working in a multidisciplinary and collaborative setting is expected.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department has two separate B.S. degree programs with approximately 630 undergraduate students in the Civil Engineering Program and 170 in the Environmental Engineering Program. Both programs are ABET accredited. The Department’s undergraduate programs are consistently rated as among the best in the U.S. for non-Ph.D. granting institutions, and the department proudly supports extremely active and highly regarded student chapters of the Air and Waste Management Association, American Society of Civil Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, and Engineers without Borders. The Department also offers an M.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with approximately 50 active graduate students.
