Position Summary

The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (CME) at the United States Military Academy (USMA), in West Point, New York is seeking qualified candidates for the West Point Class of 1953 Academic Enrichment Endowment Chair (full-time position) to enrich the study of Civil Engineering at West Point to begin in May/June 2022. 

The position is for qualified academic, business, or government leaders with substantial bases of experience and a national/international reputation for excellence.  The position will entail becoming part of the full-time faculty in the Civil Engineering Program and actively engaging in the West Point faculty domains of teaching, scholarship, cadet development, service, and faculty development.  The position will also advise and mentor the Civil Engineering faculty and bring unique career and professional perspective to the program through their past experiences.  Candidates should demonstrate a rich and extensive background in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.

As successful candidate will leverage their expertise through teaching, mentoring and sharing professional experiences to advance the current ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program to new heights with long-term and sustainable benefits.  Ideal candidates will have established eminence in at least two of the following three areas: 1) academia, demonstrated with advanced degree(s) in Civil Engineering or closely related field and teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level; 2) industry, demonstrated with technical experience in the field of Civil Engineering (or closely related); and 3) military, demonstrated technical experience within or in working with Department of Defense/US government through projects, partnerships or contracts.

This endowed chair position is generously funded by the West Point Class of 1953 in support of the Civil Engineering Program and enriching the study of Civil Engineering at West Point.  This includes a 12-month salary and benefits.

As one of the oldest engineering disciplines, Civil Engineering was at the forefront of the origins of West Point as an academic institution and continues to be an important program today.  The Civil Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.  It consistently ranks in the U.S. News and World Report top 5 Civil Undergraduate Programs in the Nation, including 2022 rankings.  Civil Engineering at USMA is a vibrant and energetic program with more than 120 cadets enrolled, averaging about 40 graduates per year, and over 20 staff and faculty motivated to educate, develop and inspire agile and adaptive leaders of character who design and implement innovative solutions and win in complex environments as trusted Army professionals. It falls within the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering – the preeminent developer of undergraduate engineer-leaders and a model learning community of cadets, faculty, and staff.

USMA is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained community with libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants among other facilities. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Responsibilities

  • You will teach at least one section of a course each term in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering as the Class of 1953’s Distinguished Chair in Civil Engineering.
  • You will advise and mentor the Civil Engineering faculty to advance the program as the Class of 1953’s Distinguished Chair in Civil Engineering.
  • You will participate in CME’s Instructor Summer Workshop (June-August) during the first year of assignment as a new faculty member to inculcate into the Department, become versed in the teaching nuances of West Point and well-integrated into the faculty team.
  • You will assist in developing external relationships for the CE Program to enrich cadet projects, research opportunities, and ABET Advisory Board annual meeting.
  • You will meet the teaching and faculty development requirements through regular in-person contact and engage with cadet development in and out of the classroom.
