Department Head, Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

About Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

In the NC State Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE), our purpose is to improve society via research and education related to infrastructure, human health, and the environment.

We are a vibrant community of 49 faculty, 14 staff, and more than 700 undergraduate and 300 graduate students working together in a collaborative, diverse, and collegial environment that is enhanced by supporting our different points of view. Our faculty includes internationally renowned engineers, many of whom have received awards for research, teaching, and outreach, including 15 winners of the NSF CAREER and other junior-faculty awards. Our students ‘think and do’ with experiential learning on real-life problems, and they become leaders in industry and academia.

Over 150 ongoing research projects are supported by over $23 million in annual research expenditures. Our research strengths are reflected in a wide range of graduate programs including computing and systems; construction engineering; environmental, water resources, and coastal engineering; mechanics and materials; structural engineering and mechanics; transportation systems and materials; and geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineering. Our state-of- the-art laboratory facilities were boosted further with our move to the brand-new Fitts-Woolard Hall, located on NC State’s Centennial Campus near the Constructed Facilities Laboratory, award-winning Hunt Library, and industry and government facilities. The department is affiliated with more than 6 interdisciplinary centers and institutes (https://www.ccee.ncsu.edu/research/centers-and-facilities/) focused on transportation, nuclear energy facilities, novel materials, and other emerging research areas.

CCEE has a strong commitment to innovative research and encourages active collaboration in cross-disciplinary activities. The department partners with industry and government to conduct research at the leading edge of science and technology. Most important, the research that we perform today has both immediate and long-term impact and serves as the foundation for safe, smart, and sustainable infrastructure in the future.
