The Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems at the University of Georgia (UGA) is hiring four postdoctoral researchers to join an interdisciplinary team from UGA and the United States Army Corps of Engineers – Engineer Research and Development Center (USACE-ERDC) as part of the Network for Engineering with Nature (n-ewn.org) initiative.  These four positions focus on engineering, education, and equity aspects of natural infrastructure systems, nature-based solutions, and Engineering With Nature® (https://ewn.erdc.dren.mil/).

Postdoctoral Researcher in Science and Engineering Education

This postdoctoral researcher will work with the broader team to train students and professionals in the theory and practice of nature-based solutions, emphasizing integrative systems thinking, interdisciplinarity, empathy, and equity to develop holistic, socially situated solutions to complex climate adaptation problems. This initiative will result in a variety of educational outcomes reaching multiple audiences and ranging in scale from transportable lectures and modules on Engineering With Nature to degree-scale curricula and internship programs. The postdoc will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating these activities with partners from diverse disciplines and sectors.

Candidates must have a PhD in a related field (e.g., Science Education, Engineering Education, Anthropology, Geography, Ecology, Public Administration/Policy, Planning, Civil & Environmental Engineering). Experience working on interdisciplinary teams and working with novel forms of pedagogy is highly desired. Candidates should have outstanding communication skills and the ability to coordinate across large groups. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in informal education, professional training, curriculum development and/or outreach.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Social Equity in Nature-Based Solutions and Water Resources Planning

This postdoctoral researcher will work as part of an interdisciplinary team from the University of Georgia, the Tribal Nations Technical Center for Excellence (TNTCX), Tribal partners, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers – Engineer Research and Development Center (USACE-ERDC) to develop and direct research related to Nature-Based Solutions and water resources planning. The objective is to co-design and implement methodologies and methods to incorporate a range of worldviews on landscapes and waterscapes into the technical, procedural, and operational aspects of water resource management and engineering planning. The position will be co-supervised by Brian Bledsoe, Director, IRIS, and Professor, College of Engineering, and Don Nelson, Professor, Department of Anthropology.

Candidates must have a PhD in a related field (e.g. Anthropology, Geography, Ecology, Public Planning, Hydrology). Experience working with Tribal Nations and on interdisciplinary teams is highly desired.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Modeling and Monitoring Natural Infrastructure and Nature-Based Solutions

The roles and responsibilities of this position will include a combination of:

  • Developing and using real-time sensors and control systems to monitor natural infrastructure installations/testbeds including stormwater systems, living shorelines, and marshes.
  • Modeling interactions between shoreline protections and coastal marsh migration under sea level rise.
  • Work with military installations to support flood resiliency and advance nature-based solutions for climate resilience.
  • Co-authoring journal manuscripts and research reports for project sponsors and oral presentations of research to sponsors and at scientific meetings.

Candidates should have a PhD in hydrology, water resources engineering, coastal engineering, or related field; and are expected to have a demonstrated high level of expertise in developing monitoring techniques and tools. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate the ability and commitment to thrive in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment and the ability to conceptualize and implement high quality/high impact engineering research projects. In addition, applicants showing a demonstrated interest in working across disciplinary boundaries at the upland-aquatic interface to examine the physical responses of nature-based systems to coastal environments will be given preference.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Hydrodynamic Modeling of Riverine and Coastal Natural Infrastructure

The roles and responsibilities of this position will include a combination of:

  • Hydrodynamic and morphodynamic modeling of riverine and coastal systems.
  • Developing guidelines for design of natural infrastructure systems, probabilistic flood mapping and risk communication tools.
  • Co-authoring journal manuscripts and research reports for project sponsors and oral presentations of research to sponsors and at scientific meetings.
  • Communicating regularly and in a timely fashion with the PI regarding research and other issues relevant to the operation of coastal laboratories.

Candidates must have a PhD in engineering, hydrology, geomorphology, or related area; and are expected to have a demonstrated high level of expertise in modeling of hydraulics, sediment transport, and river processes. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate the ability and commitment to thriving in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment and the ability to conceptualize and implement high quality/high impact engineering research projects.
