Scope of Job:

The Civil Engineering (CE) Department at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for one non-tenure-track Lecturer position to start Fall 2022 semester to meet the growing student enrollments of the CE department of about 770 undergraduate and MS students with 17 faculty members. The five areas of CE emphasized in the undergraduate degree plan are structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction management, transportation engineering and water resources/environmental engineering. The graduate program will focus four areas of environmental/water resources, structural/geotechnical, construction/transportation, and energy/infrastructure. The department is one of the fastest growing departments at the university. This position is also expected to provide service to the Department, like student mentoring, participation in outreach activities, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a minimum of a master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited university. Candidates with a PhD from an accredited university may be considered for a senior lecturer position. Candidates with significant industrial experience and/or a PE license and more than 10 years of practical experience in civil engineering or a related profession may also be considered for either an Assistant Professor of Practice or a Senior Lecturer title.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:

Applicants should have a strong commitment to teaching and will be expected to advise and mentor students and develop or supervise teaching laboratories as well as teach traditional, hybrid or online courses in addition to providing service to the Department, College and University as required. Applicants with training and demonstrated expertise in any Civil Engineering or closely related areas may be considered for the position. Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential.

Preferred Qualification:

PhD is preferred. Teaching experience, particularly in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline, and professional licensure is desirable, as well as ability to use technology to support teaching and learning. Industry or teaching experience is preferred. Prefer broad background with ability to teach across most of undergraduate curriculum. Also experience in online teaching or online class development is a plus. Fluency in both English and Spanish are a plus, since UTRGV has a high percentage of Hispanic students and is a premier HIS (Hispanic-Serving Institution) with Excelencia Certification.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
