The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at San Diego State University is seeking an innovative and energetic academic leader to serve as department chairperson beginning in Fall 2022.  The Department is strongly committed to excellence in both research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to continuing its promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The applicant must be a Full Professor, hold a PhD in Civil, Construction, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline, have experience in the development and management of research programs, and possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills, a commitment to both research and teaching excellence, the ability to promote collegiality and consensus building, and a strong commitment to shared governance. The Chair is expected to promote an atmosphere of inclusion, tolerance, and appreciation of success and respect for all, foster industry partnerships, maintain a continuous appreciation for diversity, and work effectively in a multicultural campus and community setting.

The Chair reports to the Dean of Engineering and serves as the chief representative of the department. The chair must uphold the principles of shared governance, fairly implement established policies and procedures, oversee departmental budget and resources, maintain positive working relationships with faculty and staff, communicate with openness and honesty, seek feedback, build consensus and shared vision, resolve conflict, and model best practices in teaching and research.

The minimum requirements and desired qualifications for the position are:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Earned PhD in Civil, Construction, or Environmental Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Full Professor with a record of scholarship and professional activity that merits appointment with tenure.
  • Prior administrative experience relevant to the position.

  • Demonstrated commitment to both research and teaching.
  • Demonstrated commitment to faculty and staff shared governance, transparency, and ability to build consensus and promote collegiality
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and justice
  • Appreciation of diversity and ability to work effectively in a multicultural campus and community setting.
  • Experience supervising and collaborating with professional staff.
  • Experience with course planning and budgeting.
  • Record of strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Record of fostering industry partnerships.
  • Record of engaging professional growth and development and mentoring of faculty.
