Location: Livingstone House, Leeds with home working currently due to Covid 19

Purpose of the role

Yorkshire Water are currently recruiting a Senior Civil Engineer who will provide technical leadership, direction and management to the Engineering Design team and provide project engineering and engineering design support services to the Asset Planning & Programme Delivery Team. This role will have technical engineering support and design responsibilities working in conjunction with the Project Management teams with regard to advising on the technical and engineering suitability and approval of design and construction activities delivered by YW Framework Partners.

The Senior Civil Engineer will work in close partnership with the project management department whose team provide delivery of the capital programme for Yorkshire Water. The role is to deliver proficient and efficient engineering design support to ensure that schemes and programmes of work are completed in line with, Yorkshire Water Engineering and design guidance, legislation, relevant British and European Standards. The Senior Engineer shall lead a team of design engineering professionals (as part of the technical assurance consultancy framework) to support this need and will look for continuous improvement opportunities to enhance capital and construction deliverability.

Key Accountabilities

Some of the key responsibilities you will have will include but are not limited to:
  • Provide leadership, technical direction and management to the Engineering Design team for delivery of excellent performance by setting clear expectations linked to business targets, having meaningful performance discussions that recognise and reward the right performance and behaviours and challenges where individual performance and behaviours do not meet expectations.
  • Provide technical support to the team, project management community and partners for solutions developed within Programme Delivery and wider Asset Management.
  • Responsible for the development, review and monitoring of business processes for engineering design and project engineering services.
  • Responsible for developing a planned programme of activities in support of the Capital Programme and in line with company procedures.
  • Working in partnership with Asset Planning, Asset Integrity, Strategic Planning Partner, Framework Partners and Programme Delivery team.
  • Accountable for identifying and initiating engineering design and construction solutions to deliver robust and affordable engineering solutions against a TOTEX and whole life cycle process whilst delivering efficiently and in support of the capital programme
  • Working in partnership with the Capital Programme Delivery Managers for provision of planned technical support to the Capital Programme.
  • Provides long term vision for the team to ensure that standards are effectively implemented.
  • Supports Programme Delivery teams and Framework Partners to ensure the capital programme is delivered in line with Business Plan, company policies and standards.
  • Determines continuous improvement needs and implements appropriate solutions.
  • Attends necessary meetings with wider engineering team functions, programme delivery and partners to ensure alignment of goals, priorities and achievement of success
  • Assists in co-ordination of the project engineering design and construction support.
  • Supports the wider engineering function in developing and implementing best practice techniques.
  • Provides technical support in the field of personal engineering expertise to both emergent project issues and long-term improvements.
  • Analyses business risks and programme opportunities to develop technically proficient engineering solutions to support delivery of the Asset Management Plan.
  • Liaises with suppliers, technical planning and procurement personnel on design and specification of equipment and construction activities.
  • Drive excellent standards and performance in health and safety in design, risk management and ensure compliance with the YW Safety Policy.
  • Demonstrate relentless drive, energy and determination to deliver sustainable outperformance for YW that rigorously achieves against demanding competitive industry benchmarks.
  • Ensure that robust financial management and commercial awareness form the foundation of all business decisions, aligning local activities with unit and company plans. Pro-actively manage all expenditure and maintain a consistent focus on regular financial forecasts.
  • As part of this role you may be required to take part in a formal standby rota.
  • Be the lead in driving innovation and engineering excellence through the programme delivery team including leading partner forums and supply chain engagement.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Chartered Engineer with a relevant degree level qualification.
  • Significant, proven water and/or wastewater industry relevant engineering design and design management experience in an engineering and process plant construction environment.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of ground investigations and interpretation of ground investigation reports, gravity flow hydraulics and structural designs.
  • Experience in identifying practical/innovative solutions to ensure the risks from a process plant are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) with the ability to apply cost-benefit analysis where appropriate.
  • Proven experience in sustainably integrating the output from significant engineering projects into business-as-usual business processes. This applies to processes across the full asset life-cycle (Design, Operate, Inspect, Maintain, Decommission).
  • Experience of managing and leading an engineering design team with a proven track record of driving sustainable performance against challenging business targets.
  • Familiarity with operating projects in accordance with the CDM Regulations and internal business Control of Work policies and procedures.
  • Experience in the application of Quality procedures, document control and Management of Change (MoC) procedures in engineering design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts into more readily understood information suitable for a wider business audience, able to influence people across multifunctional teams throughout the business.
  • Proven ability to engage with customers internally and externally, developing and maintaining strong positive business relationships in order to understand their needs and recognise opportunities.
  • Demonstrate relentless drive, energy and determination to deliver sustainable outperformance for YW that rigorously achieves against demanding competitive industry benchmarks.
  • Clearly demonstrates the Yorkshire Water company values and behaviours.
  • Full valid EU driving licence

  • Asset management experience within a large-scale engineering or process related industry.
  • Experience of technical contract management.
  • Experience of leading and embedding change, able to influence and drive right culture and behaviours.
  • Previous experience of ISO55000/PAS 55 Quality Assurance Systems.
