The Opportunity:

Arup's Civil Engineering and Highways teams are looking to recruit Civil and Highway Engineers to join our team of bright professionals in either our Cardiff, Winchester or Bristol offices. From your first day, you'll join an unrivalled community of experts, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards a professional qualification. Our current projects are varied, exciting and often high profile, including prestigious buildings, zero carbon schools and hospitals, large highway and transportation schemes, state-of-the-art rail and bus infrastructure, and sustainable infrastructure for large residential projects. This will provide a high variety of interesting opportunities for you to learn and grow your experience and capabilities.

We work across all phases of projects from advisory, concept, through to detailed design and construction supervision. We deliver projects for a whole host of clients and organisations including government agencies (both national and local), local authorities, private developers, contractors, and utility companies. We collaborate on projects across the UK and overseas as part of a wide and diverse global organisation and are therefore able to bring expertise in from far and wide as well as provide support to others around the world.

We are looking to increase the size of our diverse and vibrant teams with keen, creative, and enthusiastic colleagues, with relevant professional experience. You should, ideally to have gained or be working towards a professional qualification or Chartership. Furthermore, our management team has a wonderful track record of enabling and providing opportunities, help, and support to gain such qualifications and develop your career further.

Ideally, you will have experience in general highways and civil engineering design involving earthworks, roads, the public realm, drainage, utilities and flooding. As we are a key player in the currently vibrant UK transportation and civil engineering markets, and our business is enjoying a period of significant growth. We have invested heavily in research and development initiatives to help understand the key forces driving the shape of our sector. This insight has enabled us to plan for a future which links design and management expertise with a rapidly expanding digital environment. We also have a very vibrant infrastructure team, with many opportunities to collaborate across disciplines.

We are looking for candidates with cross-discipline exposure and those that would be happy to work alongside our diverse, collaborative, and engaging colleagues in other disciplines.

Duties will include:
  • Use of at least one CAD package (AutoCAD or MicroStation CAD packages or similar) for design and a good knowledge of spreadsheets.
  • Collaborative and creative approaches to finding solutions
  • Responsible for defined parts of design projects and individual projects, with the ability to check the quality and accuracy of own work.
  • Presenting design options and solutions
  • Working with clients, customers and colleagues to generate mutual agreeable outcomes.

Desirable skills
  • A passion to provide a design solution which aims to improve sustainability and social value
  • Interest in GIS, BIM, Digital automation and/or conducting design in a 3D or digital environments as well as Digital Design processes
  • Knowledge of civil engineering design software packages (MicroDrainage, Civils 3d)
  • Practical knowledge and experience of relevant highway design codes, in particular DMRB.
  • Ability in (and demonstrable experience of) the application of 3D highway design software packages (e.g. OpenRoads, MX, Civils 3D, etc) on major highways.
  • Demonstrate technical capability such as alignment and junction design, drainage, pavement, signs and road markings.
  • Technical skills and experience in highway drainage design

Qualifications
  • Suitable Civil Engineering Degree in line with a technical specialism
  • Masters degree, in a relevant field, would be preferred
  • Have or be actively working towards a professional qualification with a relevant professional body e.g. IEng/CEng MICE.
  • Demonstrable experience within the fields of civil engineering and highways
