The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University invites applications for a full -time academic year tenure track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the broad area of geosystems engineering, with a start date of August 18, 2022. The overall areas of research interest for the position are urban and coastal sustainability, energy and climate change. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, soil improvement and stabilization, geomaterials, energy geotechnics, subsurface treatments and storage, environmental geotechnics, organic-rich geosystems, geochemical fluid-rock interaction, geomechanics, geohazard mitigation, soil-structure interaction, marine geotechnics, and urban subsurface heat islands. Of highest importance is the candidates' intellectual depth and promise in research and teaching. Additional preferred qualifications are the applicant's ability to create synergy with existing research expertise in the civil engineering department, and the ability to conduct intra-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research.

Responsibilities for the positions include developing a robust externally-funded research program, pursuing high-impact scholarly research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as part of the civil engineering curricula, advising and guiding students, and becoming engaged in outreach and professional activities. A Ph.D. degree in civil engineering or a field closely related to the position focus is required; and a professional engineer's license, or the potential to obtain one, is highly preferred.

Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a field closely related to the position focus.

Preferred Qualifications:

Research contributions as demonstrated by publications and/or awards. Potential for securing externally supported research, particularly at the federal level. Past teaching experience and performance, with specific emphasis on the capability of handling a teaching environment similar to that of Stony Brook. A professional engineer's license or the potential to obtain one. Ability to create synergy with existing research expertise. Ability to conduct intradisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.

Department description: Civil Engineering at Stony Brook was established in 2012 and is now one of nine academic departments within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The department currently consists of 10 tenure-system faculty members, with approximately 185 undergraduate and 40 graduate students. Faculty in civil engineering department are engaged in diverse research, mostly grouped in the following areas: coastal and hydraulic engineering, computational engineering mechanics, cyber-physical systems, data analytics and smart cities, structures and infrastructure, structural mechanics, and water quality. The department recently developed a number of key state-of-the-art research facilities, including an 85-ft integrated wave and current flume facility, and a super-computing cluster with over 1,200 cores and 70 TB data storage. A properly equipped geotechnical engineering laboratory is also available.

As one of the only two comprehensive (Bachelors to Ph.D.) civil engineering programs within the State University of New York, the Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University is playing a key role in addressing critical infrastructure challenges regionally and globally. The department is a partner of the New York State (NYS) Center for Clean Water Technology, the NYS Infrastructure, Transportation, and Security Center, and the Atlantic Marine Energy Center. Faculty also have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERT), the Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation. Collaborative opportunities also exist with Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, both of which are less than 30 miles from campus.
