Services offered throughout the product life cycle, cutting-edge technology and decades of product expertise set Caterpillar apart, providing exceptional value to help our customers succeed. The company principally operates through three primary segments - Construction Industries, Resource Industries and Energy & Transportation - and provides financing and related services through its Financial Products segment.

What do we do?

At the Peterborough facility we are responsible for the marketing, sales and manufacturing of industrial engines for both the Cat and Perkins brands. In addition Caterpillar has multiple manufacturing sites based in Asia and the Americas and a Perkins Aftermarket Sales and Marketing team based in Irlam. Wherever you work, together we create sustainable, world-changing solutions that impact lives around the globe.

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Structural Simulation Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary Computer Aided Engineering team, responsible for supporting the design and mechanical development of internal combustion engines and other power systems for Caterpillar.

The scope of the Structural Simulation Team's work includes core engine components and assemblies, engine-mounted components and assemblies, engine-machine integration and electrified systems, including batteries. The majority of the team's tasks involve the construction of linear and non-linear finite element models for solution on a powerful HPC platform. Applying your knowledge and experience of structural simulation to a variety of engaging assignments that support and enhance the performance, durability and quality of Caterpillar products.

You will contribute to the delivery of new or improved simulation processes, thereby improving the efficiency and reach of simulation within Caterpillar. You will be helping to define our future products as well as supporting our current products.

Job duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Identification, analysis, and resolution of technical challenges using your strong understanding of engineering principles.
  • Performance of structural simulation of complex systems; including static, dynamic, thermal and fatigue analysis. Execution of tasks following established internal procedures, while being competent and confident to deviate from such procedures where appropriate.
  • Clear verbal and written communication of results to internal and external customers.
  • Support and management of the simulation aspects of larger engineering projects, with the support of subject matter experts. This will require engagement with multi-disciplinary project teams. You will guide project teams on the appropriate and timely use of structural simulation, define that work and manage its execution by others (including an extended offshore team), communicate the findings to the project team and explain its implications on the project.
  • Development and evolution of complex simulation processes to improve effectiveness and support future needs, working closely with partners throughout Caterpillar.
  • Support and provision of advice to other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, dealers, customers, and suppliers. Coaching of junior & flexible resources.

Required qualifications and characteristics:
  • Accredited bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering subject, plus academic or industrial experience in structural simulation.
  • In-depth understanding of the fundamentals of structural simulation using finite element analysis.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform complex assignments.
  • Experience of managing complex simulation projects and tasks.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively and to build effective relationships with team members, internal customers, project managers & process partners throughout Caterpillar.

Desirable experience:
  • Experience of internal combustion engines, rotating machinery or other machinery.
  • In-depth experience of simulating complex structural systems.

Exposure to some, or all, of the following analysis tools would be useful;
  • Finite element pre and post processors, such as NX or Hypermesh
  • Finite element analysis solvers, such as Abaqus or Ansys
  • Fatigue analysis tools, such as nCode or FEMFAT
  • Multi-body dynamics tools, such as GT-SUITE, SIMPACK or ADAMS

We assume that knowledge gained with one software package can be transferred to other packages performing similar functions.

NB. The panel cannot make assumptions when shortlisting therefore please demonstrate your qualifications and experience on your CV relevant to the criteria outlined.

Pending the number of applications, the criteria for the position may be enhanced to facilitate shortlisting. #LI
