An exciting opportunity for a Principal and Senior Civil Design Engineer "Rail" to join an established and busy in-house design team specialising in rail infrastructure engineering projects.

My client has a wealth of experience working on sensitive, live assets in highly regulated environments, we deliver exceptional peace of mind for our customers, creating and maintaining assets across a growing range of high-quality public and private sectors. These include rail, power generation, electricity distribution, flood defence and waterways.

The in-house design team consists of specialist designers at various levels of competency responsible for design engineering on a variety of civils, rail, telecoms and engineering projects and frameworks including CP6, asset management contracts, infrastructure projects and tendered rail / civils schemes.

Projects can typically include bridge re-construction/replacement, upgrades and refurbishments, station work (platforms etc.), access for all schemes, structures including bridges, tunnels and footbridges.

The Role

Rail Civil Design Engineer. The colleague would be involved in various projects throughout the organisations portfolio including Asset Management, Renewals, Enhancement and upgrade/new build station projects. The candidate will support the organisation with telecoms design deliverables and the provision of Civil advice.
The Principal & Senior Civil Design Engineer has responsibility for the development of technical solutions, in addition to supporting programme & budgetary control, SHEQ considerations, and the coaching and mentoring of colleagues. This individual will:
Demonstrate initiative and confidence to put forward solutions based on sound engineering principles, acting on any observed non-compliances with CDM Regulations.
Challenge the brief and propose alternatives, enabling innovative development of unambiguous engineering solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
Develop and agree design philosophies of engineering solutions.
Hold, or be working towards the CRE (Design) role on Network Rail schemes.
Lead site inspections / surveys as required in order to inform the design.
Design and check engineering solutions.
Produce and maintain the Designer's Risk Assessment and Decision Log, and review and comment on those undertaken by others.
Produce clear, consistent, referenced calculations, reports and sketches to current standards and best practice.
Clearly communicate design philosophy and requirements with other team members, ensuring appropriate documentation.
Represent the Design Team at meetings with the Project Delivery Team and/or external Clients and Stakeholders.
Ensure work is delivered within the team's financial, quality and programme targets, expanded further below.
Assist change and develop more efficient processes and design tools to assist the efficient delivery of engineering services.
Mentor and coach team members, carrying out scheduled performance and development reviews for direct reports
Develop and build relationships with Clients that support fulfilment of contractual obligations.
Keep Clients informed of costs or implications of change in a timely manner.
Seek feedback from Clients during as well as at conclusion of project to ensure a good relationship.
Assist the Principal Engineer in the management of the day-to-day workload of technical staff within the design team (including proposals for allocation of staff to project), and the execution of specific delegated tasks in times of absence.
Recognise and promote best practice and safe working practices in all areas.
Promote a culture of excellence in Design & Engineering towards its customers in order to exceed their expectations, and fulfil the vision of becoming the consultant of first choice.

Requirements

To excel in this role, you will have previous experience as a Civil Senior Design Engineer in a rail project environment.
In-depth knowledge and understanding of Operational Communications within the UK Rail sector
Able to demonstrate proficient experience of design
Thorough working knowledge of Network Rail Standards
Experience in the design of rail civil infrastructure
Experience in rail with associated standards and processes for engineering assurance
Understanding of factors influencing the buildability of design solutions, including engagement with planners, estimators and construction staff to establish the most sustainable, efficient and economic methods of construction and use of materials within the boundaries of technical requirements.
Working knowledge and understanding of the design process
