Our client is a major Power and energy company, they are recruiting for a substantially experienced Lead Civil Engineer to join their Hydro & Storage / Engineering & Outage Civil team.

Their UK hydro portfolio is spread over large rural areas in North Wales, Northern England and Scotland. The Lead Civil Engineer - Scotland, will predominantly operate in Scotland. The role involves travel to the remote sites, with office-based tasks carried out at a local office and also by agile/ home working.

The Role

As the Lead Civil Engineer you are part of an international civil engineering team and support the Operations team in operation, maintenance, improvement and development of the hydropower diverse assets through multiple concurrent projects on a diverse range of mountain environments. The assets range in age from 1905 to 2020 and number approximately 7000 individual items.

You will additionally :

· Provide engineering support, project engineering and project management to support hydropower business. Problem identification with technical solutions, specification writing, tender assessments and award recommendation, site supervision for quality and Health, Safety and Environment, payments, contract administration including as built information, etc.
  • Develop In-house concepts, outline and detailed design of civil engineering structures for operational hydropower assets as well as scheme extension projects including preferably drafting services in AutoCAD.
  • Manage designers including the Principal Designer role under the CDM Regulations
  • Manage contractors and on occasion adopting the role of Principal Contractor under the CDM Regulations, ensuring all statutory H&S legislation is satisfied
  • Lead on value creation - The role includes initiating and driving measure to increase the value of the hydro schemes
  • Provide end to end support for assets including condition assessments and inspection reports, e.g. by using in-house tools like SACE, proposing asset management strategy, assessment of risks, costings and business cases for proposed measures
  • Source, train, manage and take responsibility for secondment civil engineer(s) as work demand requires
  • Have an understanding of The Reservoirs Act 1975 (as amended) for England, Wales and Scotland and ensuring compliance for the company's 7 reservoirs as guided by specialists
  • Develop and project manage a range of measures, including management of multiple concurrent contracts and framework agreements. Develop and set project budgets, ensuring they are realistic and are presented to the RO for approval. Ensure projects are run to the agreed budgets and programme
  • Respond to urgent civil engineering related plant breakdowns with a local presence
  • Maintain external stakeholder management involving technical and resulting commercial issues arising from other asset owners, landowners, emergency services, local authority and third party services
  • Have control of quality for proposed measures during outages including liaising with station staff and managers, permit issue arrangement and compliance by contractors
  • Encourage innovative approaches to technical issues and adopt industry best practice.


Your Knowledge and Skills

You will:

· Be qualified to Honors or Masters Degree Level in Civil Engineering and Chartered by the Institution of Civil Engineers

· Possess significant Broad Knowledge of consultant design practices and civil contracting site procedures - Cross-discipline

· Have at least 10 years engineering experience in design and construction including hydropower and reservoirs

· Have a wide range and in-depth knowledge of construction applicable health and safety legislation including Management of Work Regs, HSW Act 1974, COSHH, LOLER, PUWER, Confined Spaces

· Hold recent experience of project management/engineering, including CDM, project management, programming, for projects >£1m

· Have Detailed Knowledge of NEC and CDM regulations with the competency to act as Principal Designer and Principal Contractor

· Be TO (Technical Officer) accredited (or capable of training to TO accreditation)

· Possess knowledge of Reservoir safety legislation

· Have an appreciation of drawing and modelling techniques

· Have strong communication skills and safe behavior at all levels

· Have a flexible, intercultural sensitive and modern working style.

· Demonstration of complex thinking skills, including both analytical and conceptual skills and ability to communicate ideas into different target groups

· High level of commitment, enthusiasm and team-oriented working style
