We're looking for a Principal Civil/Structural Engineer to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

You will be joining the Major Structures Group of the Facilities Engineering Technical Authority, which is responsible for all design aspects of the through life management of infrastructure across Devonport Royal Dockyard, which has a wide range of facilities developed over the last 400 years.

What will you be doing?

As a Principal Civil Engineer, your responsibilities will include the development and approval of new designs; production of technical solutions to deficiencies in existing infrastructure; as well as the supervision of a team of engineers. You will also be responsible for the reviewing and sentencing of new designs, methods of construction and temporary works submitted to the Technical Authority.

The experience you'll bring

You will need to be educated to degree level in a Civil, Structural or a related engineering discipline. You will also need to be an experienced Chartered Engineer, or a candidate capable of demonstrating equivalent skills, knowledge, aptitude and experience.

We would also like you to have:

A sound understanding of engineering design and safety practices as you will provide technical advice to senior stakeholders.
Project specification, planning project management and budgeting experience.
Experience of the inspection of civil engineering infrastructure, sentencing of defect and the development of remedial solutions.
Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills, as you'll be required to supervise the work of a team of engineers, and deputise for the Group Manager as and when required. What a role with Babcock offers:
