Job Description

This position will be responsible to carry out Civil Engineering level assignments related to Avista’s power generation facilities, supporting systems, and the company’s critical infrastructure.  This position will perform engineering work which requires broad technical abilities and company knowledge as well as originality, innovative thinking and collaborative problem solving on projects that may include civil infrastructure and structures, water, recreation, renewable energy, and natural resources.. 

Avista Civil Engineers interfaces with plant operations and maintenance personnel to investigate and troubleshoot issues that are identified.  Develops or contributes to civil and structural designs, assemblies, and construction details while managing and supporting outside design consultants as necessary.  Work duties will encompass a broad range of civil and structural engineering aspects to support engineering design and analysis as well as field engineering support of construction activities for both capital improvement and maintenance projects and activities alike. They provide on-site field engineering and quality control with company labor crews and contractors while manufacturing and construction is in progress. They perform data collection and data analysis including but not limited to horizontal and vertical surveying, well sampling, piezometer measurements, and other instrument measurements as needed. They also document equipment standards and assist in the development of material and design standards to support project work

Assignments may involve specification writing, contract document creation, floor or platform loading analysis and design, hydraulic flow studies, dam stability calculations, concrete design, gathering data and creating surveillance and monitoring reports, and varied civil design support on an on-going basis.  Create or informs operations procedures and maintenance practices, as necessary, at project completion. 

There is the potential for involvement with innovative projects to enhance our generation facilities using state of the art and state of the practice techniques and methodologies. Requires constant collaboration on multi-functional project teams to assist in the successful completion of projects which enhance the value of energy generation and delivery for our customers.

This position will also contribute to Avista’s Dam Safety Program, ensuring continued compliance with all regulatory dam safety requirements. The successful candidate will be an integral member of the Avista Dam Safety Team by supporting various aspects of the Program.  These aspects may include: surveillance and monitoring; surveying; stability analyses; site specific seismic studies; hazard and risk analyses; as well as overseeing and guiding capital and maintenance projects that directly support Dam Safety.    

Moderate amounts of in-service travel and overnight stays for work duties are necessary as part of this position.

Requirements

Requires advanced specialized knowledge or technical background represented by a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of engineering work experience is required. Preference will be given previous Generation Facility and Dam Safety experience. Professional Licensure a plus but not required. Other combinations of education/experience may also be considered.
