We have a great opportunity for Structural Engineering Apprentices to join Blue Engineering in one of the four engineering teams. A Structural Apprentice will provide technical support to our engineers who design and manage construction projects, mainly in the small to medium-sized building projects. Projects will range from residential/commercial and the arts sector.

Apprentice engineers will study Civil Engineering (BEng) undergraduate degree, over a five-year period, on a day release program with Southbank University. This role is progressive and will develop as the apprentice moves through the course. As the apprentice gains more skills, knowledge and experience through their work and study, they will begin learning how to engineer their own projects with support from our well-seasoned engineers.

· Upon successful completion of the degree and end-point assessment, you will meet the requirements needed to reach Incorporated Engineer status with the Institute of Civil Engineers.

· After the apprenticeship, we expect you to continue to grow your career with us and there is no limitation to the level you can rise to.

Qualification Requirements

Candidates to our apprenticeship opportunities will need to meet at least one of the minimum academic prerequisites below:
  • 3 A-levels (BBC or higher)
  • with Maths
  • with Physics or Chemistry

OR
  • Level 3 BTEC Engineering at grade DDM or higher (any type is ok)

Candidates with International Baccalaureate will need to demonstrate that they have the equivalent of the A-Levels above in Maths and Physical Science.

Responsibilities

· Production of CAD drawings

· Preparation of calculations & specifications

· Document management

· Supporting the administration of projects

· Liaising with the design team and clients

· Ensuring outputs meet the required standards

· Meeting agreed deadlines

· Working as a proactive member of a team

· Contributing to providing solutions to problems

· Working primarily in an office environment and carrying out site inspections with team leads

A Typical Day

· Going on a site visit in the morning

· Coming into the office and scheming a project

· Sitting down with the team to discuss design changes/ideas

· In the afternoon, having a workload meeting to run through resources/project timelines

· Call with the client

· Putting together calculation packages

Your knowledge, skills, and behaviour

· To be curious and enjoy exploring what is possible when presented with a challenge.

· Apprenticeship candidates will have at least three A levels at Grades A*-C including Mathematics and Physical Science (Either Physics or Chemistry) or will have completed a BTEC National Diploma in a relevant field for the degree.

· Candidates are also required to start the programme holding a L2 Maths and English qualification (GSCE grade A*- C / new tariff grade 4 or above), which is compulsory within the apprenticeship requirements.

· To communicate effectively between your team and with other design professionals.

· To be professional and well presented.

Things to consider

· Must live within 1 hour regular commuting distance to London. If your regular commute will be longer than 1 hour, this is not in keeping with a healthy work/life balance.

· Have full eligibility to work in the UK - no work permit visa available.

· This is primarily an office-based role working at a desk using a computer for most of the day - option to work from home.

· We use AutoCAD for our drawings, TEKLA and ROBOT for analysis and design and the Microsoft Office 365 suite for emails, document writing, etc. You do not need prior knowledge of these, but you would be expected to learn the pieces of software quickly so prior knowledge of some design and drawing software is essential.

Progression at Blue

Blue operates a 360-degree review process with biannual reviews. This allows for you to provide feedback on how Blue and your colleagues are doing, as well as those who work alongside you at varying levels to provide feedback on how you are doing. There will be a probation period for the first three months, where we will meet with you monthly to check in on how you are getting on. Blue also offers quarterly reviews which are required for Apprentices, this helps build the framework and guidance on the next steps of your progression.
