Department of Public Utilities - Water & Wastewater

Civil Environmental Engineering and Construction Management division

Naperville's Water and Wastewater Utility is one of the state’s largest combined utility systems, operating both a water distribution system and a sanitary district with wastewater treatment. The Water Utility just increased its Capital Improvement Program to $27 million for 2022, including $7.6 million annually in watermain replacement. The Wastewater Utility is also preparing for a large, once-in-a-career treatment plant expansion which will span the next 10 years. The chosen candidate will have a key role in the design and construction of these improvements.

Primary responsibilities will include the following:

  • Designing and preparing construction documents for water distribution, water supply, sanitary sewer, sanitary lift station and wastewater treatment projects; Providing resident engineering for major utility construction projects; Reviewing engineering drawings of subdivisions and commercial development plans for water mains and sanitary sewer system construction, material design and layout; Developing and updating sanitary sewer and water system hydraulic models; performing hydraulic network analysis of water distribution and sanitary sewer systems.

Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, 2-5 years (or more) of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, a State of Illinois P.E. license, strong skills in managing projects, in oral and written communications, and in problem-solving & conflict resolution, abilities to prepare comprehensive technical reports, and to read, analyze & interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, contract documents & specifications.
 

Civil / Environmental Engineer Department of Public Utilities - Water & Wastewater

Civil Environmental Engineering and Construction Management division

A self-starting, motivated and goal-oriented individual is needed to perform a variety of municipal engineering functions, including engineering design, construction management and inspection of water and wastewater projects; reviewing private development projects and permits for watermain and sanitary sewer system construction; and performing engineering calculations and analysis for water and wastewater systems.

Primary responsibilities will include the following:

  • Designing and preparing construction documents for water main and sanitary sewer projects; Providing resident engineering and construction management for watermain and sanitary sewer construction projects; Assisting Senior Civil-Environmental Engineers with more complex sanitary lift station, water supply and wastewater treatment project design and construction; Review of engineering drawings of subdivisions and commercial development plans for water mains and sanitary sewer system construction, material design and layout; Development and updating of sanitary sewer and water system hydraulic models; and performing hydraulic network analysis of water distribution and sanitary sewer systems.

Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering; one years’ experience supporting civil engineering projects; skills in managing projects and in oral & written communications; problem-solving & conflict resolution abilities.
 

Civil Engineer Department of Public Utilities - Electric

Utility Engineering division

The City of Naperville’s Department of Public Utilities - Electric seeks a degreed civil engineer to assist in civil, structural, and electrical engineering projects for the Utility Engineering division. If you would like to apply your civil engineering knowledge at a municipal electric utility that operates at the front end of industry technology, and if you seek to make an impact with a successful, high-performing team, please consider Naperville!  We actively seek a professional to better round out the engineering team with her/his Civil Engineering skill set.

Primary responsibilities will include the following:

  • Performing professional engineering work related to the design and construction of electric utility system improvements including duct banks, substation civil plans, and spill prevention control and countermeasures (SPCC). Assisting in the development and/or review of plans, specifications and estimates for related electrical projects, traffic signal projects, communications projects, street lighting projects, and similar systems on streets, roadways, and inside substations; Performing studies, researching products and issues, and writing reports.

Qualifications include a BSCE (or similar engineering field), plus 0-3 years of relevant engineering experience, EIT eligibility within the United States, experience working in a team setting, proactive communication skills, both oral & written, and a willingness to learn basic electrical standards such as IEC, ICEA, AEIC and NESC.

Its territory area of 39 square miles serves a population of 162,000+. The utility is known as a leader and innovator in asset renewal, sanitary sewer rehabilitation and maintenance activities.

The city-owned Electric Utility maintains 16 substations and 1000 miles of transmission and distribution lines (of which 93% are underground). A decade ago, Naperville modernized its electric grid with the installation of 57,000 smart-meters and a wireless & fiber-optic backbone. The Smart Grid initiative allows the utility to better analyze electricity consumption and offer an associated portal to its electric customers.
