The Opportunity

We are seeking a Civil Engineer for our Newcastle office. We are currently instructed on a number of interesting and exciting projects ranging in type and size from £500k to £90m in construction value. These projects are across many different sectors of development including residential, education, and waste sectors. They range from small affordable housing site infrastructure to Major schools and college projects.


The successful candidate will be expected to work with limited supervision, preparing technical design information (including 3D models) and written inputs to technical reports to deliver engineering solutions for a diverse range of projects. The work will cover sections of infrastructure, highways, earthworks, remediation, surface drainage, SUDS and sewerage. These services will be applied to residential, commercial, employment, retail, industrial and renewable energy schemes. The work will be across all project phases including pre-planning and feasibility, through to detailed design and construction.

The responsibilities of this role will include;

· Completion of feasibility and pre-planning assessments;

· Preparation of engineering models including earthworks and site levels appraisals, cut and fill assessments, infrastructure design and traditional surface and foul water drainage design, including SuDS;

· Carrying out site inspections and surveys;

· Working with fellow engineers and technicians to translate outline engineering proposals into detailed models and designs in accordance with relevant design standards and codes;

· Managing the delivery of individual tasks and activities to programme and budget;

· Liaising with clients, project stakeholders and other internal and external disciplines;

· Being an effective and supportive team member within a multi-disciplinary team, with shared responsibility for the delivery of a wide range of projects;

· Preparing engineering reports in support of planning applications, site appraisals and submissions to statutory authorities.


The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate that they are a quick learner, with proven initiative to work within a team and be a good communicator with good organisation skills. Relevant industry experience should be demonstrable, with direct emphasis on 3D modelling for civil engineering or other related construction/environmental disciplines. Knowledge and/or experience of working within a BIM environment and Civil 3D is desirable. Commercially aware, and with a willingness to own their own workload, the ideal candidate will have a personal commitment to work to tight deadlines while under pressure.

Essential Criteria

· Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent or working towards);

· Experienced in the use of AutoCAD and Civil 3D, incorporating infrastructure modelling;

· Experience in the use of MicroDrainage, Flow or other drainage design software;

· Working knowledge of design codes and standards (eg DMRB, BS/Eurocodes etc);

· High standard of written English and proficient with the use of Microsoft Office suite including Excel and Word;

· Experienced in the production of infrastructure design packages & drawings, specifically highway and/or drainage design;

· Ability to interpret engineering drawings and sketches;

· Good understanding of design procedures, change control, checking and review;

· Experience of working in multi-disciplinary and collaborative design team environment.

Desirable Criteria

· At least two years post graduate experience

· Member of ICE (working towards Incorporated or Chartered Member) or related Institution.

· Experience in the use of drainage design packages, such as MicroDrainage or Causeway Flow, and associated design codes (eg Building Regulations Document H, Sewers for Adoption etc);

· Experience in the production of engineering calculations;

· Experience in the preparation of design details for drafting by others;

· Experience of the housing and development markets and a broad background in providing support to the process of land development;

· Experience of preparing formal reports and correspondence;

· Experience in one or more of the following: Flood Risk Assessments, private and adoptable drainage design (S104/S106), adoptable road design (S38/S278), detailed earthworks modelling, design of infrastructure for large scale industrial/commercial facilities;

· Holds CSCS Card.
