JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at WPI seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position, at either the assistant or associate professor level, in the general area of mechanics, materials, and structures. Our department seeks to address major society-scale challenges, including cost-effective infrastructure renewal, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable and resilient built environments that support diverse and equitable social systems. We seek a colleague able to teach and conduct research in the broadly-defined areas of structure and materials in civil engineering. Examples of emerging areas of interest include, but are not limited to, next generation concepts for high performance, sustainable, and low-cost materials and structures optimized for automation, robotics, and prefabrication in construction; new approaches to materials, processes and structures for decarbonization or electrification of built environments; application of advanced computational and data science methods in modeling, simulation, and structural design; end-to-end, concept-to-product integration of architectural and structural engineering for efficient operation and construction.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program leading to national and international recognition, to teach courses pertaining to structural design and engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to participate in WPI's signature project-based curriculum, and to contribute to the operation and promotion of the department, college, university, and the profession. Candidates seeking the rank of Associate Professor must document a strong track record of successful teaching, research, and service. Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or related field prior to appointment at WPI.

 

WPI has completed a $17 million renovation of the department's building and has completed a new academic building that provides additional space for architectural engineering and other programs. Worcester Polytechnic Institute was ranked first in the nation in the category of “Schools that do the Best in Combining Scholarly Research with Classroom Instruction” by the Wall Street Journal. WPI is consistently ranked among the top national universities, and in the top 50 most innovative universities, by US News and World Report.
