Join the Village of Northbrook’s Public Works Department team where you will be responsible for inspecting public and private improvements installed as part of the development of residential, industrial, and commercial properties to ensure they meet the Village’s engineering standards and the approved plans. The Public Improvements Inspector will also assist with the review of development plans.


The ideal candidate for the Public Improvements Inspector will be able to read and understand construction plans and be knowledgeable in construction methods for roadways, water main, storm and sanitary sewers, and other civil engineering projects. Essential duties will include plan review, interpretation of codes and engineering standards pertaining to improvements, and inspection of public and private improvements in the field. Ideal candidates will be proficient in in the use computers as part of the plan review and inspection processes and have experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, ArcMap/ArcGIS. The Public Improvements Inspector position will work indoors and outdoors throughout the year in all weather conditions.


Qualified applicants must possess a high school diploma with two years of college level training in Civil Engineering or a closely related field or a combination of relevant experience and education to total 5 years. Experience in municipal infrastructure construction observation and inspection is desired. Candidates must also possess good written and oral communication skills and have a valid Illinois driver’s license.


The expected starting pay for this position is $84,250 +/- DOQ. The Village offers a generous benefit package including but not limited to:
