As a Senior Mechanical Engineer you will support in the delivery of the main systems within the Cooling Water Island, this is focused around design development activities. The Senior Engineer shall work as part of a design team in the development of the design deliverables in order to meet the Small Modular Reactor development

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Support the Systems Lead in delivering the engineering activities for the Cooling Water Island. This will involve taking the lead role for one of the major systems within the Cooling Water Island.
  • Support in the design development for the main systems within the Cooling Water Island. This will involve working as part of a design team to support delivery of packages of work to meet time, cost and quality requirements.
  • Support engagement with the supply chain to develop the design, this will include optioneering between potential solutions.
  • Deliver the work for which you are responsible for.
  • Lead a team to deliver the scope of work for your system.
  • Deliver the design work to meet the programme and quality requirements.
  • Work with the other SMR Island engineering functions within the consortium to identify interfaces with the Cooling Water Island.
  • Support in the development of requirements using a system engineering approach based on the overall project requirements. This shall include reading those requirements down to the sub-systems as well as determining the associated verification and validation activities required.
  • Support in the substantiation of the systems designs against the requirements.
  • Preparation of design documentation, including technical specifications, design reports, system descriptions and technical drawings.
  • Attend and input to presentation of designs to stakeholders as well as leading and supporting other technical reviews (HAZOPs, Optioneering meetings, etc).
  • Challenge the design against the design principles to ensure we have optimised the design against the project requirements.


Your Background:
  • This role would suit someone who is looking for a challenge in developing a system design using first principles rather than following the norms. The candidate should be looking to innovate, challenge the design and ensure we have considered all options and opportunities when developing a design.
  • Operational experience of thermo-fluid systems is required
  • Experience of Front-End Engineering design (FEED) is preferable, as would experience of taking a design through to detail design and EPC.
  • You should have experience of working as part of a project team and delivering to a project plan.
  • You shall be able to write technical documentation, with an eye for detail to ensure that you are delivering work to the highest standard.
  • You shall have experience of complying with applicable regulations (i.e. CDM, Designers Risk Assessments, etc.).
  • Experience with using 1D CFD modelling FloMASTER or similar systems is desirable
  • Can demonstrate delivery of work to meet quality requirements.
  • You should be able to present to different stakeholder groups and adapt your presenting approach dependent on the audience.
  • It would be beneficial if you have Systems Engineering/ DOORS awareness
  • You should be able to demonstrate experience in working with and managing the supply chain in delivery packages of work.
  • Preferable to have or being work towards CEng in a relevant discipline
