Due to some exciting changes and new funding sources, the City of Petaluma is growing its Public Works and Utilities Department to champion some very exciting projects. In addition to several other engineering positions (to see other opportunities CLICK HERE), the City of Petaluma is looking for an Engineering Manager to oversee and lead the Capital Improvement Program (CIP). This position will also serve as a supportive and guiding leader of 12 staff and manage a CIP budget of $60M+. This Manager will balance hands-on engineering work, with their leadership and management duties, and bring several years of experience in civil engineering overseeing complex projects. The ideal candidate will have excellent project-management skills and understand current planning and process details, along with the nuances of meeting the community’s needs. This position will have a strong understanding of local, state, and federal ordinances, regulations, and laws and translate technical details to different audiences. These winning technical strengths combined with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and build effective relationships is desirable. THE JOB/ THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Engineering Manager will oversee the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and lead large, complex projects that improve City property and infrastructure. They will collaborate with other City staff and elected officials to prioritize CIP projects and timelines. This position oversees a team of 12 that includes engineers, project managers, map specialists, engineering and CAD technicians, and grant writers, in support of a CIP budget of $60M. They will provide their team with strong direction about the objectives, policies, and priorities of the Division. This is a public-facing role that requires the Manager to develop frequent presentations and provide answers to the public. They will be a project manager for simultaneous programs, including ones outside of CIP, such as solar, streetlight, and dredging projects. The Manager will serve as a visionary leader to their team and report to the Director and/or Assistant Public Works and Utilities Director.

 

The ideal candidate will be a professional, dedicated, and enthusiastic leader. They will see challenges as opportunities for improvement and champion innovation and risk taking in staff. They have a solid understanding of civil engineering, design, and construction and have the financial acumen to manage the CIP budget. The Manager will put in place cutting-edge engineering strategies, work with experts in the field, and create an inclusive and collaborative team culture. The Manager will also ensure their team builds trust with the community, inspires creative thinking, and makes engineering decisions that are educated and meet best practices. They will be an organized project manager, taking CIP projects from conception to completion, while demonstrating the interpersonal skills to build relationships in and out of the Division.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain such knowledge and abilities is described below:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering, or a closely related field. Five years of increasingly responsible professional civil engineering project management experience; at least two years of experience must include supervisory experience. Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license, or the ability to obtain the license. Valid registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California.

Desired:

  • Certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP)

SALARY & BENEFITS: An annual salary of $133,390 - $162,115 DOE/DOQ and an attractive benefits package.
