About Mission Zero Technologies:

MZT is an early-stage start-up backed by a Tier 1 Climate VC, Anglo American and Deep Science Ventures. We are pioneering a breakthrough Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology that can scrub CO2 from the air using a fraction of the energy and cost compared to incumbent technologies. Within 18 months of creation, MZT has progressed its technology from concept to demonstrator, successfully raising £7.5M from a mixture of private and government funding to supercharge its growth and deliver pilot projects from 2023. MZT's technology is a hybrid of approaches, combining efficient solution-phase capture of CO2 with a continuous and compact electrochemical separation technology.

  • We strive to realise a world where humanity has new tools to fight climate change and produce everyday products such as concrete blocks and plastics - all from atmospheric carbon emissions. To do this we need to realise a decentralised Gt supply chain for CO2 sourced directly from the atmosphere and fundamentally alter our relationship with carbon.

    The opportunity:

    MZT is hiring a senior process engineer, specialising in water treatment (ED, RO, desalination, etc.) and membrane-based processes, to work with the engineering and projects teams for scaling up and providing technical leadership on the electrochemical solvent treatment processes for our upcoming DAC plants (starting with 1000 tCO2/year capacities). This will entail leading on the translation of lab data (from electrochemical cells) to plant scales, designing and optimising the electrochemical cell systems at a plant scale, providing guiding leadership on control & operations, leading with vendor engagement, and supporting the broader team downstream as well as external partners in executing commercial-scale technical projects.

    The role will be hybrid with on-site work encouraged when appropriate.

    Key responsibilities
    • Lead the design process and vendor engagement for plant-scale electrochemical cells for MZT's DAC process.
    • Support lab and engineering teams in scaling up in-house bench-scale test data for electrochemical solvent treatment.
    • Support project management team in technical delivery of feasibility & pre-FEED-level plant design and analysis for pilot and commercial systems.
    • Conducting data analysis and flowsheeting activities to support key plant design requirements.
    • Interfacing with lab team and engineering teams to inform other elements of the DAC process.
    • Applying fundamental process scale up knowledge to take ideas and concepts from the lab to the pilot hall through to full scale system design.

    What we are looking for:

    • A BEng/MEng in Chemical Engineering or related engineering fields.
    • Minimum of 2 years industry experience working with plant-scale electrochemical water treatment processes.
    • A passion for developing technical solutions for the world's greatest challenges.
    • Demonstrated experience with flowsheeting, engineering, and computational software such as Aspen, AutoCAD, gPROMs, or equivalent suites.
    • Demonstrated experience in design and modelling of electrochemical water treatment processes.
    • Evidenced strong practical skills, comfortable with both hands-on work and desk-based tasks.
    • Good understanding of fluid dynamics and demonstrated experience working with liquid-based electrochemical systems.
    • Ability to design and critically evaluate PFDs & P&IDs on paper and live plant scales.
    • Good understanding of hazard and risk identification and mitigation.
    • Demonstrated engineering leadership and interfacing experience.
    • Ability to adjust to rapidly changing plans and work on projects with varying degrees of uncertainty.

    • Minimum of 5 years industry experience working with and leading technical teams for plant-scale electrochemical water treatment processes.
    • Experience designing, running and supporting pilots or commercial plants.
    • Experience with engineering supply chain management.
    • Basic understanding of fundamental electrochemistry principles and background industrial chemistry knowledge.
    • Familiarity with processes handling CO2.
