Our client has an opportunity for a graduate with an education in geology, engineering geology, geotechnics or other relevant earth sciences to join their expanding team in Redruth, Cornwall and begin their engineering career in a Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental consultancy. The role will see a mix of office-based engineering work and fieldwork varied to suit project needs.
Our client provides geotechnical and contaminated land consultancy, as well as in-house site investigation services, monitoring, and inspections. They also have our own team of surveyors that provide utility tracing, GPR and topographical surveys.
The role will be based in the Cornwall office, with a mix of office and site work across the region. The Southwest team are based in the office and warehouse at United Downs, a few miles from Truro and Redruth. The team there routinely undertake fieldwork west of Bristol, with occasional needs further afield.
The Role
A week might look like:
- Liaising with clients, engineering supervisors, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders
- Coordinating ground investigation works with our field technicians and drillers
- Supervising intrusive investigation activities such as drilling, trial pitting and in-situ testing
- Support for onsite works
- Soil and rock logging and laboratory scheduling
- Processing field and laboratory results
- Writing technical memos, reports and communicating our work to our clients
- Working with our accounts department to prepare invoices
What are we looking for:
The following attributes are essential:
- A degree or similar qualification in geology, engineering geology, geotechnics or other relevant earth sciences
- UK Driving Licence
- Computer literate, able to use MS Office applications, SharePoint etc
- Eagerness to obtain chartership through an appropriate professional institution
- Enthusiastic and supportive team member with strong verbal and written communication skills
- A strong work ethic and desire to learn
- Familiarity with and ability to interpret geological maps
- Ability to manage time and complete tasks efficiently across multiple projects
- Capable of presenting ideas and working collaboratively within a team
- Flexibility for occasional work assignments nationally with overnight stays
The following attributes are desirable:
- A Masters in a relevant discipline
- Relevant industry experience through placements or internships
- Experience in design to relevant British Standards and Eurocode
- Experience in developing ground models and assessing existing risks and solutions related to ground activities
- Understanding and/or experience of design for foundations (shallow and piled) and retaining walls
- Familiarity with the concepts of Contaminated Land
- CSCS Card
