Civil Engineer Higher Apprenticeship 2022

The Role

Aimed at college students, the Jones Bros Civil Engineer Higher Apprenticeship programme gives young people an opportunity to earn money while gaining hands on and practical civil engineering experience and academic qualifications. Working as part of our project delivery teams alongside our plant and construction operatives, trainees will be exposed to setting out, GPS technology, cost control, procurement as well as health and safety and environment matters.

If you are already part way through a civil engineering qualification and you are able to complete your course part time, there may be opportunities for sponsorship through the remainder of your course on a day release basis while gaining experience and earning money on one of our projects.

Participants will attend college to receive training and work towards their qualification. On the job training is provided at our construction sites throughout the UK.

Qualifications Gained

• HNC/HND in Civil Engineering
• Level 3-6 NVQ
• Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card
• Peripheral qualifications including Health and Safety Awareness and First Aid Training

Apprenticeship programme

Year 1 Apprentice Engineers

First 12 Months (Start end of September 2022)

Week 1 Company Induction, IT issue and mandatory on-board training including Pansophy/COINS/PIM mobile/Plant Capture/Cyber/GDPR/Health & Safety.

Week 2 to 5 - Until college starts the apprentice engineers deploy to project civil engineering sites for experience and introduction (Site Work Experience)

College part 1 - In November college starts for 8 Weeks. On completion of the 8 weeks the 1st Year Apprentice Engineers report to the training centre in Denbigh.

Denbigh Training Centre - 2 weeks of training including:

• Cat & Gene
• Setting Out
• First aid
• Fire Marshal training
• SSSTS
• Jones Bros BMS training
• Advanced COINS training.
• Deploy back to civil engineering project site and finish HNC and NVQ assessments.
• Study days will be permitted and agreed upon at the Training Centre Denbigh to complete HNC and NVQ assignments.

Year 2 Apprentice Engineers

In January of the second year the HNC apprentice engineers return to college for 8 weeks to complete part 2 of the HNC.

On completion of HNC Part 2 College phase the Apprentice Engineers are issued a Company vehicle. (18 Months Service)

Deploy back to civil engineering project site and finish the HNC NVQ assessments.

Study days will be permitted and agreed upon at the Training Centre Denbigh to complete HNC and NVQ assignments.

The HNC completion could take 12 to 18 months to complete depending on the completion of all modules and assessments

Year 3 Apprentice Engineers

Apprentice Engineers start HND Part 1 College starts in the January and finishes in March of year 3

Deploy back to civil engineering project site and finish HND part 1 & NVQ assessments.

Study days will be permitted and agreed upon at the training center Denbigh to complete HNC and NVQ assignments.

Year 4 Apprentice Engineer

Apprentice Engineers start HND Part 2 College starts in the January and finish college in March and awarded HND in Civil Engineering.

On completion of HND Part 2. If all HND & NVQ assessments have been completed, the Apprentice Civil Engineers will be promoted to Jones Bros Civil Engineers

Duration

The full scheme can take up to four years to complete but could come to an end sooner if the qualification is gained in less time.

Progression

Successful completion of your Civil Engineering qualification can lead to you becoming a Site Engineer at Jones Bros.

Continual professional development is encouraged and we may support you through further academic study of degree and masters qualifications. Once academic qualifications have been achieved, progression to professional qualifications with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) can follow.

Many of our past trainee engineers have progressed to be Site Agents and Project Managers responsible for multi million pound civil engineering schemes throughout the UK. Some of the most senior positions in the Company are occupied by our former Trainee Engineers including Major Projects Managers and Regional Managers.

What we are looking for

Entry requirements will vary depending on the college providing the course. As a guide applicants should possess at least one A level or an equivalent BTEC qualification in a relevant field, with appropriate supporting passes at GCSE grades in at least 4 subjects including Maths.

Work experience will also be taken into consideration.

If you are already enrolled on a course and there is a possibility of completing the course on a part time basis, there may be an opportunity for you to join our scheme for the remainder of your course.

A full UK Driving Licence is essential for this apprenticeship.
