On behalf of Arup, we are looking for a Structural Design Engineer for a 6-month contract based remotely throughout UK.

Arup are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Arup are currently looking for Structural Design Engineer.

Responsibilities for Structural Design Engineer
  • Responsible for managing all aspects of the successful delivery of structural design following the assurance processes and ensuring programme and quality KPIs are met, within own area of responsibility.
  • Technical/Deputy asset lead responsible for multidisciplinary design technical coordination (e.g., lead the technical interfaces with geotechnical engineers, drainage design etc.)
  • Technical liaison with internal and external interfaces, construction team, 3rd parties. Being the main technical point of contact between the design team and everyone else (design teams of adjacent assets, the client, CAT3 checker, external parties etc.)
  • Responding and raising Technical Queries and RFIs when required.
  • Supervise junior structural engineers and CAD/BIM modellers and check their work including calculations, reports, 3D models, and drawings.
  • Offer 'hands-on' design support to the team if required.
  • Other duties as and when required


Essential Skills and Qualifications for Structural Design Engineer :
  • Structural design experience in multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects in the UK and/or EU.
  • Good construction experience and understanding, able to address constructability issues and queries from the client's construction team, and check shop drawings.
  • Able to look beyond the problem at hand and see the wider implications based on strategic thinking and strong technical expertise.
  • An excellent communicator who enjoys collaboration, sharing knowledge and learning from others.
  • Has confidence to make clear decisions with vague information, to make reasonable assumptions if necessary, documenting and communicating them clearly, and who is willing to take responsibility for them.
  • Expert user of the following structural design software: Oasys GSA, Adsec
  • Experienced with 2D/3D CAD/BIM software (such as Autocad, Microstation, AecoSim Bentley Navigator etc.)
  • Expert user of Microsoft Office suite (i.e. Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Teams, Sharepoint).
  • Programming skills using Python and/or VBA preferred.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Previous experience in similar role preferred.
  • Rail experience strong advantage

Please note that due to recent changes in Off Payroll (IR35) legislation, our client only operates with contractors that operate via a PAYE or Umbrella model.
