East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is now recruiting for Materials Testing Technician II (Geotechnical) to immediately fill one regular position. Reporting to the Materials Testing Supervisor, the Materials Testing Technician II is primarily based in the EBMUD’s Materials Testing Laboratory, with field work in the EBMUD service area and at the upcountry facilities. The Materials Testing Technician II is responsible for laboratory and field testing of construction materials including soils, rock, mineral aggregates, asphaltic mixes, concrete, and steel.

Typical duties include:
• Conducting field and laboratory tests on engineering properties of construction materials such as soils, rock, and concrete, including tests of compressed strength, particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, consolidation, triaxial shear, field density and moisture content and other properties.
• Conducting subsurface exploration, working with drilling crews, keeping drilling logs, performing soil and rock classifications in the field, and installing and monitoring geotechnical instrumentation.
• Applying laboratory and field test requirements and methodology, then monitoring results, evaluating compliance with EBMUD specifications, and recommending acceptance or rejection of materials.
• Operating, cleaning, adjusting, installing, and maintaining instrumentation and equipment.
• Making calculations, reports and recording field and lab results in a computer database.
• Preparing charts, graphs, curves, and other representations of test results.
• Performing dam safety inspections, taking and recording measurements for dam surveillance programs, including groundwater elevations, soil movements, and seepage flows for local and upcountry dams.

The ideal candidate will have experience with MS Excel, Geosystem and gINT software, and other related applications; a Radiation Safety and Use of the Portable Nuclear Moisture/Density Gauge certificate; American Concrete Institute (ACI) certifications in concrete testing; strong oral communication skills; ability to work effectively with engineering, technical, construction and field staff; ability to work independently in the field; and strong math skills. Previous experience with state-of-the-art soils and materials testing equipment and instruments is preferred.

The salary range is $7,285 per month increasing to $7,649, $8,031, $8,433 and $8,855 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Requirements:
1. Completion of the twelfth grade or its equivalent.
2. Two years of experience in soils or materials testing, surveying, construction inspection or suitable laboratory work.
3. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.

In addition, the incumbent must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the position, including sufficient agility and strength to dig test holes with proper equipment, and to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of geographic and climatic conditions, and where insects and poison oak may be hazards.
