Coconino County Public Works (CCPW) is recruiting for a Transportation Planner. The Transportation Planner is a key contributor to CCPW, specifically working within our Engineering Division to improve the quality of life and promoting economic vitality to the region by helping to develop a safe, sustainable and resilient transportation network. The Coconino County Transportation Planner understands and embraces the breadth and complexity of Public Works projects and serves as the Division's key technical advisor and manager of the transportation planning program.

Working within the Engineering Division, the Transportation Planner:

• Prepares long-range transportation plans for the County.

• Conducts traffic and road safety studies utilizing the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); presents results to those who made the request during public meetings.

• Represents the County with interagency working groups and other outside agencies.

• Manages the development and implementation of transportation plans, amendments to County Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances and the Engineering Design and Construction Manual.

• Works with citizen groups and individuals on planning and/or road issues.

• Prepares strong applications for state and federal funding for grants to study or construct transportation projects.

• Meets with developers and property owners.

• Works with Parks & Recreation Department on trail plans for the County.

• Presents information to the Planning & Zoning Commission and the Board of Supervisors related to transportation plans and traffic requirements concerning specific developments or conditional use permits.

• Administers various ordinances and street name assignments.

• Prepares and maintains records and reports.

• Supports emergency response by the Public Works Department as well as the County. 

Essential functions of this position include and not limited to: driving; working with and around others, co-workers, clients, agencies, etc.; working alone; dealing with interruptions; repetitive motion (hand/wrist) for computer input and driving; vision acuity (near/far); hearing and speech for ordinary conversation; touch/finger dexterity for computer work, visiting field sites and walking on uneven terrain.  

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in transportation planning, or related field and three years of related experience: OR, any combination of education, training or experience, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

The ideal candidate brings a balance of practical transportation planning experience and professional communication, negotiation, and partnering skills, who desires to work in a challenging and innovative environment. Specifically, CCPW seeks a professional with knowledge in the areas of local and national standards for traffic control devices, and traffic analysis and planning. 

This position is exempt from overtime.
This position is safety sensitive.

Note: Individuals in exempt classifications as part time employees may be classified as non-exempt per FLSA law regarding minimum weekly salary requirements.
