On behalf of Arup, we are looking for a Civils Structural Engineer for a 6 contract based in Solihull 2 days/ Remote 3 days .

Arup are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services.

The role
  • The successful candidate will provide sound technical contributions to our world class projects, including the design of bridges, tunnels and heavy civil engineering structures such as tunnel shafts for underground railways.
  • They will also develop sustainable solutions for existing rail and highway structures that require capacity assessments, strengthening designs or modifications for future use
  • Building on their developing technical basis, the successful candidate will be coordinating overall designs by interfacing with other infrastructure disciplines and communicating their designs through 3D models and other digital media.
  • Will also provide damage assessment reports (internal)
  • Perform stress and foundation report on existing bridges
  • Will be involved on the input towards to design process for new bridges


Essential Skills and Qualifications:
  • An understanding of structural behaviour, particularly in relation to old railway bridges (old steel and brick arch structures). Being able to apply common sense and logic to the problem of 'what happens when the ground moves?'
  • Experience assessing and/or designing modifications to existing bridge structures and an interest in the history of the development of civil engineering techniques and materials.
  • Able to display good independent engineering judgement and have a pragmatic approach to problem solving.
  • Good communication skills (the ability to explain complicated behaviour, give presentations, write reports, produce clear graphics/diagrams etc)
  • Good analytical skills for a variety of software packages (we use GSA, x-disp and Ring - if not familiar with them ability to pick up the skills to use new software easily and quickly).


Please note that due to recent changes in Off Payroll (IR35) legislation, our client only operates with contractors that operate via a PAYE or Umbrella model.
