We'll cover this during the assessment process.What you'll be doingLeading a team of Environmental Engineer, the Principal Environmental Engineer is a key member of the team that creates the culture where environment and sustainability best practices are embedded into the day-to-day running of the development and assurance of projects. You'll be responsible for managing, coaching, and developing a team of environmental engineers, ecologists, and archaeologists. As the Principal Environmental Engineer, you'll be responsible for providing the expertise to ensure that all legal and contractual environmental requirements are fully discharged, and that appropriate resources and processes are in place.You'll engage with our regulators and stakeholders, including environmental pressure groups, local councillors, the Environment Agency, local authorities, Historic England, and Natural England and ensure Project compliance with all applicable environmental legislation and support the delivery of reporting against our metrics in carbon, biodiversity, and natural capital.he key responsibilities of the role include:
- Provide direction, support, and assistance to all project personnel to enable them to manage their project risks, and environmental duties and responsibilities
- Work closely with related technical disciplines such as customer and stakeholder engagement advisors and town planners
- Participate in the development, review, and update of the project Environmental Management System
- Represent and promote the Environmental team in meetings, workshops, management reviews, and forums.
- Be familiar with and communicate the requirements of current applicable environmental legislation, particularly with an understanding of infrastructure and related applicable environmental legislation
- Be familiar with the ever-changing regulatory landscape and prepare changes to ensure future legal changes are built into our processes and guidance
- Assist in the development and delivery of suitable environmental and sustainability training for all project staff and contracting partners
- Raise environment/sustainability awareness and community relations awareness
- Support external liaison with regulators such as the Environment Agency and Local Authorities etc.
- Continuously promote and seek recognition for Thames Water (e.g. through articles, presentations, awards, etc) thereby demonstrating visible environmental excellence
- Be educated to a degree level in an appropriate environmental/ecological or sustainability discipline or possess equivalent role-specific experience
- Membership of a relevant professional body or demonstrable relevant experience in the environment and sustainability field is desirable
- Previous work experience in the Utility industry is desirable but not essential
- Understand the regulatory environment we work in to achieve compliance with our environmental engineering regulatory requirements
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, to interact with colleagues and stakeholders
- Be a great team player with the ability to lead and work collaboratively with all stakeholders but also capable of working independently
- IT literate with an awareness of knowledge management
- Have a desire to adopt and demonstrate behaviours aligned with Thames Water's values
- Have a passion for continuous professional development and an active approach to driving diversity within Engineering in Thames Water
