AFRY's Energy Division employs over 2,000 experts with a presence across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. AFRY's Energy Division is organised into five competence areas: thermal and renewable, hydro-electric, nuclear, transmission and distribution and contracting. Technologies covered under by the thermal and renewable energy team include solar PV, concentrated solar, wind, battery storage, conventional thermal power generation, biomass, waste to energy, carbon capture utilisation and storage and hydrogen.

Job Description

The opportunity exists for a junior engineer to join AFRY's Energy Division within the expanding Thermal and Renewable Energy team in the UK.

You will provide clients with help and support at all project stages, including: technical and economic feasibility studies, technology assessments, technical due diligence reviews, Lenders' Engineer services, front end engineering design (FEED) studies, owner's engineer services, engineering-procurement-construction-management (EPCM) services, operation and maintenance support and optimisation and expert witness services.

Your key tasks and responsibilities will be:
  • Providing engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of project challenges;
  • Providing design support and providing technical reviews and comments on designs completed by others, as applicable;
  • Providing conceptual, preliminary and detailed design deliverables, including but not limited to: drawings, technical specifications, cost estimates, construction schedules, etc;
  • Preparation of thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches;
  • Attending factory and site acceptance tests;
  • Monitoring / inspecting site construction activities;
  • Proactively pursue continuous professional development including working towards chartership with a recognised institution
  • Maintaining accurate records and files;
  • Identify potential health & safety, design, sustainability and commercial risks on our projects and contribute towards mitigating them
  • Supporting the company's goals and representing the company positively and professionally;
  • Learning to manage projects effectively and communicate with other designers, clients and stakeholders to achieve project success;
  • Participating in business development work including developing contacts, presenting AFRY's capability, preparing proposals and managing bids;

Qualifications

We'd love to hear from you if :
  • You have a minimum level 2:1 degree in process, chemical or mechanical engineering from an accredited university;
  • You have between 2 and 5 years' experience in the thermal energy sector (preferably with thermal power generation or energy from waste processes);
  • You are a self-starter, ambitious and able to manage multiple tasks;
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • You are willing to work in a variety of different roles;
  • You are willing to work away from home office on UK projects for extended periods of time or abroad involving short stays.

Experience of one or more of the following would be an advantage :
  • Understanding of power plant processes, including steam generator, water steam cycle, flue gas treatment and main power plant equipment. Basic knowledge about waste management and waste incineration would be an asset;
  • Any specialist plant knowledge (e.g. boilers, steam turbines);
  • Energy and process modelling skills using relevant software packages (e.g. Thermoflow);
  • Commercial awareness and contract knowledge (e.g. IChemE or FIDIC) ;
  • Design experience gained from concept development and detailed engineering;
  • Practical experience gained from construction, commissioning and testing;

Available office locations for this position are London, Oxford and Horsham. We are flexible on the office location for this position and may consider a candidate seeking remote or hybrid work schedule. Please include your preferences in your application.
