Renewables Engineer (Ground or Civils)

Edinburgh (preferred) or Glasgow

Wardell Armstrong is a successful multi-disciplinary consultancy with 13 offices throughout the UK employing approximately 500 staff. At the heart of our business lies a group of outstanding people. Working together with clients, we deliver solutions to challenging problems in Mining & Minerals, Infrastructure & Energy and Property & Development.

The Opportunity:

We have a strong and growing workload in technical and design-support for renewable energy projects including offshore wind farms (onshore elements), solar, onshore wind, energy storage, linear infrastructure, etc. We therefore currently have an opening for a Renewables Engineer (Ground or Civils) to join the team to assist on these and a potentially a range of other infrastructure or development projects across our ground and civil engineering teams.

A significant proportion of our work relates to engineering projects in their pre-consent stages, working closely with clients and other consultant teams (consenting, environmental, land, electrical designers, traffic and transport specialists, etc) to help progress the overall project, sometimes over an extended time period. However, you will be expected to assist on a range of projects, at any stage of their development, from conception, through consenting, design development and construction, and to take responsibility for the work you do.

Depending on your particular skills and experience, project work may include the following or similar:

· High level selection work, identification of engineering constraints and geo-hazards and development of options for linear infrastructure projects;

· Iterative refinement of options based on feedback from other disciplines and stakeholders;

· Siting and orientation of infrastructure to suit the terrain, ground conditions and other constraints;

· Input to ground investigation;

· More detailed assessment and / or design depending on your particular skill set (e.g. access road / track layout design, earthworks design and 3D modelling, drainage design, Flood Risk Assessments etc);

· Input to design of obstacle crossings for cable routes and pipelines, including consideration of trenchless techniques;

· Report writing and production;

· Estimation of construction quantities and development of construction traffic volume estimates; and

· Some site visits and / or supervision, generally within the UK.

Our preference is for someone based out of our Edinburgh office but we would also consider someone with a strong preference to be based in our Glasgow office. You may need to occasionally work from other offices throughout the UK.

You:

We are looking for a talented, enthusiastic and adaptable engineer, with a strong interest in renewable energy projects and who is keen to work in an engineering consultancy environment.

· A degree in civil engineering or a similar subject;

· Preference for a higher degree in a relevant discipline, for example renewable energy engineering, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, or similar;

· Confident working on their own and as part of a multidisciplinary team;

· Organised, efficient and with a keen attention to detail;

· Able to effectively manage your own time and meet deadlines;

· A confident and good communicator who can collaborate and interface directly with a variety of colleagues, clients and other external project team members;

· Good written communication skills for preparation of written communications, technical notes and reports;

· Someone who can analyse problems, create innovative solutions, and make sound recommendations;

· Have basic Autodesk AutoCAD and GIS skills;

· Have some design experience for renewable energy civils infrastructure or similar;

· Appreciation of environmental and other constraints that may impact on engineering design and be able to consider key risks presented by these; and

· Some practical onsite construction supervision experience would be beneficial.
