What you will be doing:

You will play a key part in helping to grow our low carbon Reusable Steel activities as we aim to become a market leader in the provision of ultra-low carbon steel sections to significantly reduce embodied carbon within the built environment. You will develop and deliver pre-deconstruction/demolition steel audits to advise our suppliers on the potential suitability of steel structures to be either reused or recycled in addition to providing structural engineering support to our customers to facilitate steel reuse.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prior to deconstruction/demolition, review structural plans to actively identify steel structures which have the potential to be reused (or recycled) in accordance with the Steel Construction Institute P427 Reusable Steel guidance;
  • Determine and confirm the type of structure and its use including a description of how the building is stabilised;
  • Create a preliminary listing of the steel members and undertake a preliminary inspection of the members for damage, obvious repairs, significant corrosion and any plasticity;
  • Develop and deliver pre-demolition pre-deconstruction/demolition audits to actively identify steel structures which could be reused or recycled;
  • Upon the completion of the audits clearly communicate a robust plan that maps out which steel structures can be effectively removed to maximise the potential for steel reuse and recycling;
  • Provide technically competent structural engineering advice in relation to reusable steel sections to assist with buying and selling such sections;
  • Review existing building designs and identify where reusable steel sections could be utilised;
  • Work with your operational colleagues to enhance and optimise a technically robust sampling, inspection and testing regime of the steel structures at our reusable steel facilities;
  • Work with your commercial colleagues to advise on the purchase and sales of suitable and popular steel structures;
  • Train and upskill our colleagues in their understanding of steel structures to increase awareness across the EMR business.

Key Deliverables:
  • Pre-deconstruction/demolition audits to maximise steel section reuse and recycling;
  • Ensuring that we meet and comply with the necessary technical guidance and standards in relation to the sourcing and use of reusable steel sections;
  • Work with customers to identify opportunities to employ our reusable steel sections within their developments and advise on structural suitability;
  • Utilise digital modelling e.g Revit and BIM to collaborate with suppliers and customers on the recovery and use of reusable steel sections;
  • Optimise our reusable steel inspection, assessment and testing programme;
  • Work with our commercial teams to identify popular section sections so that we can source in demand sizes and lengths which will also facilitate their ability to be incorporated into designs.
About you:

Experience & Qualifications
  • Undertaken pre-deconstruction/demolition audits in accordance with the ICE Demolition Protocol;
  • Detailed understanding of BREEAM;
  • Understanding of the Regulatory and market drivers increasing the demand for reduced carbon construction products;
  • Awareness of Life Cycle Carbon Assessments including Environmental Product Declarations;
  • Temporary Works Experience in one of more of the following:
    • Demolition
    • Construction Engineering
    • Steel Temporary works
  • Permanent works experience
    • Steel Structures
  • Design of steel structures;
  • IStructE Chartered
  • ICE chartered
  • Preferably 5 years experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of digital construction models such as Revit, BIM etc.

Key Competencies
  • Has a deep knowledge of pre-deconstruction/demolition audits and structural (steel) engineering;
  • Has practical knowledge of the construction industry either from a client and/or contractor/service provider perspective;
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to understand and interpret numeric data;
  • Highly motivated individual with a focus on outcomes and
  • Capable of working with and positively influencing colleagues and customers.

Special requirements:
  • This role involves visits to sites in the UK and potential overnight stays where required
  • Full UK driving licence
