The City of Milpitas is located at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay and is an integral part of Silicon Valley in California. The City is often called the “Crossroads of Silicon Valley” with most of its 13.63 square miles of land situated between two major freeways (I-880 and I-680), State Route 237, and a County expressway. According to the US Census Bureau, the City is the eighth fastest-growing city in the United States and the second fastest-growing city in California. The City of Milpitas is seeking a passionate and innovative leader who is a strategic thinker to serve as its new Public Works Director. The New Public Works Director will be a team player who can work well with various stakeholders and use excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships. The successful candidate will have a passion for delivering high-quality services, strengthening community connections, and leading by example. The incumbent will have the ability to plan, organize, direct, and review the activities of a large City department and will be knowledgeable about the technical, legal, and financial requirements relating to utility rates, contracts, and administration. In addition to being intuitive, professional, and highly attentive to detail, the selected candidate will have a customer service mindset and will be highly responsive to the community and Council.

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, public administration, or a closely related field, and possess five (5) years of increasingly responsible administrative and supervising experience related to public facilities and equipment maintenance, utilities’ management, the design and construction of a variety of public work projects, and implementation of climate action plans and other sustainability measures.  Candidates must also possess a valid California Driver’s License.  Registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of California is highly desired. The annual salary range for the Public Works Director is $179,545.24 - $251,364.10.
