Department of Public Works
The Department of Public Works seeks a result-oriented and innovative engineer to serve out the Department's mission to provide the highest quality public works services to the residents of Santa Clara, the development community, and our customers in a responsible and efficient manner. The ideal candidate will have engineering experience, excellent project management skills, and a strong oral and written communication background. Additionally, experience working in a team environment on significant projects, including working collaboratively with developers, contractors, technicians, field staff, outside agency staff, and the general public is essential to success in this position. The Department has focus areas that include Engineering Services and Operations and Maintenance. Engineering Services is comprised of five divisions: Administration, Traffic, Design, Land and Property Development, and Field Services. The Department of Public Works is interested in developing a list of qualified applicants to fill two current positions available within the Traffic and Design divisions, as well as future vacancies in other divisions.

The Positions
One opportunity is within the Traffic Division and will require experience in the delivery of capital improvement projects, traffic engineering, operating and maintaining the City’s traffic signals and beacons within the City, and completing traffic engineering studies related to public requests. A qualified candidate will have experience in the following areas: (1) creating plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic improvement projects, (2) reviewing and approving traffic control plans, traffic materials, and traffic designs for developer improvement and other capital projects (3) completing traffic engineering studies for sight distance, intersection control, and traffic calming, (4) calculating and implementing signal timing parameters, (5) maintaining traffic signal and beacon infrastructure, and (6) supervising staff to complete work demands.
 
A second opportunity is within the Design Division and will require experience in capital improvement projects programming, administration, and management for various city infrastructure improvement programs, including pavement, roadway/traffic signals, storm drain, sanitary sewer, parks, Fire and Police facilities, libraries, and other public facilities. The Design Division also coordinates with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the Community Rating System (CRS) program to maintain the City’s Class 7 rating. Finally, as part of infrastructure management, the Design Division leads efforts to prepare master plans for sanitary sewer and storm drain infrastructure.
