Civil Engineering Estimator (Flexible location)

We are currently dealing with a major Engineering Consultancy who are looking to expand their team by recruiting a Civil Engineering Estimator to become part of the cost estimating team undertaking work on High Speed 2. The location for this role is flexible in terms of geographical location, with some of the requirements of the role being performed from home, however, the role would require travel to offices in London and Birmingham from time to time.

As Civil Engineering Estimator your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Produce accurate and comprehensive estimates in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Produce multi-option estimates for the purposes of optioneering and sifting.
  • Contribute to the value management and value engineering processes.
  • Lead scrutiny and assurance of estimates produced by others.
  • Take a role in administering the assurance process for estimates produced across the programme.
  • Undertake research of market rates
  • Develop cost models for elements of the programme
  • Undertake benchmarking of estimates
  • Contribute to and write sections of estimating reports to be presented to the client.
  • Take responsibility for producing and reviewing key estimates on a high profile publicly funded programme.
  • Take leadership of elements of the estimating function, mentoring more junior personnel.
  • Contribute to value studies and optioneering
  • Liaise with client personnel building and maintaining collaborative working relations.
  • As the requirements grow and the team expands over time the individual may take responsibility for other more junior staff and should be prepared to step up to mentor staff and manage a team.
  • There will also be the opportunity to develop wider cost planning and estimating capability within the business unit and develop that offering to other clients so this is a role with attractive career potential that could lead to development and further rewards for the right individual.

Job requirements:
  • Demonstrable experience in civils estimating including schemes with a bulk earthworks element and significant experience of cost estimating of structures at design stage
  • Ability to develop estimates from evolving outline design information and refine these as further design detail emerges
  • Proven ability to use CCS Candy software to produce estimates
  • Flexibility and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to operate within a large multi-disciplinary team interfacing with designers, planners, environmental specialists etc.
  • Working knowledge of use of cost planning techniques for the financial control of projects during design development stages.
  • IT proficient with a high level of proficiency in Excel
  • Experience of working in an environment where quality assurance processes are applied
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Familiarity with proprietary estimating systems especially Cost OS
  • Proficient in use and application of cost modelling and benchmarking techniques
  • Experience and knowledge of whole life costing
  • Some experience of carbon estimating
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution
