POSITION INFORMATION

Under the general direction of the Public Works Director, the Deputy Director of Public Works/City Engineer is responsible for leading and performing professional civil engineering functions involving the design, planning, implementation and construction of Public Works projects. Duties include street design, sidewalk, curb/gutter, storm drainage improvements, and water and sewer systems, with adherence to federal, state and local regulations. This individual will provide assistance to developers, other engineers and architects, homeowners, and the Sequim business community. 

This position supervises the work of employees in the Engineering division, conducts performance reviews, makes decisions on hiring, transfers, promotions, grievances, discipline and discharges consistent with City practices.  He/she develops engineering service standards, schedules and coordinates issues related to engineering tasks and resolves internal or external customer disputes.  

The Deputy Director of Public Works/City Engineer is knowledgeable regarding risk management, purchasing, contracting, plans and administers the department budget, complies with applicable grant conditions to administer payroll and procurement activities, labor agreements and other applicable work rules. He/she manages regulatory permits that affect work responsibilities, as well as professional services and construction contracts as assigned by the Public Works Director.
