Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is recruiting for an experienced, productive, detail-oriented Senior Civil Engineer Specialist. The successful candidate will play a key role in specialized field support and provide direction on operations, maintenance, inspection, and the rehab or replacement of green stormwater systems and conveyance for both new and existing assets.  This support helps lead development of future and existing projects within SPU’s Drainage & Wastewater line of business.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Performs complex and difficult civil engineering and stormwater related duties including performing design review.
  • Interpret engineering plans and specifications to ensure standards are met.
  • Manages annual spending plan of 1 million and developing long range budgets.
  • Reports on maintenance activities for the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulatory reporting.
  • Perform new construction field checks to ensure final drawings are accurate.
  • Acts as technical expert and provides engineering field support to Operations and Maintenance staff and guides crews to perform work.
  • Serve as a project manager or support engineer for Operations and Maintenance rehab or retrofit work to ensure adherence to project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Coordinate with other agencies, departments, divisions, and private partners.
  • Coordinate complaints and provide excellent customer service for public property and facilities.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.

Qualifications

Experience: Two (2) years’ experience equivalent to a Civil Engineering Specialist, Associate (4 years total)
 
Education: Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology, or related field. Or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.
 
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
 

  • Work is performed in a normal City work/office environment and in the field.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites. 

License, Certification and Other Requirements:
Current State of Washington driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility.

The Ideal Candidate Should Possess some or all the following qualities and competencies: 
 

  • Strong knowledge of the principles and practices of civil and stormwater engineering.
  • Strong, motivated, self-starter who is willing to lead others and work independently.
  • Read and interpret design plans, job specifications, property descriptions, and manage contracts.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
