The Department of Engineering in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences at Boston College invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in the areas of energy and the environment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. In exceptional cases, appointment at  the rank of Professor may be considered. The university has growing expertise in areas such as  water supply and energy technologies, so candidates with related research interests in the context  of human-centered engineering are encouraged to apply. We are interested in candidates whose  research and teaching interests are driven by a desire to have a positive impact in both the academy  and the wider society. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2023.

The Department

Launched in Fall 2021, the Department of Engineering offers a Human-Centered Engineering  major (B.S. in Engineering). The program positions students to tackle the technological, human,  and societal dimensions of major global challenges in health, energy, and the environment by  integrating Boston College’s liberal arts foundation, engineering science and fundamentals,  entrepreneurial practices, design and systems thinking, and service-oriented project experiences.  Our goal is to prepare students to become engineers for a better world. Anchored in a human centered approach, engineering study at Boston College is bolstered by a global viewpoint, ethical  underpinnings, and distinctive project-based experiences that address real-world challenges. More  information about the Department can be found here:  https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/schools/mcas/departments/engineering.

The Department of Engineering is committed to student growth and formative education.  Candidates should be enthusiastic about innovative and student-centered learning. In addition,  candidates are expected to contribute to the creative work of building a new department and  academic program. Successful candidates will join an internationally recognized faculty with a  strong commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community that advances the frontiers of  engineering research in health, energy, and the environment. In their application, candidates should  include evidence of outstanding scholarship and the ability to establish and pursue a program of  high-quality research that will enable cross-campus collaborations with departments and schools  across the university.

The Department of Engineering is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all  dimensions—including but not limited to race, color, national origin, sex, religion, disability, age,  marital or parental status, sexual orientation, and military status—and believes that exposure to a  diversity of people, cultures, and ideas promotes new experiences and approaches, and expands  our perspectives. We aim to foster a diverse faculty with a broad range of interests, abilities, life experiences, and worldviews to enhance BC’s academic mission. Successful candidates will  demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion. Financial and other resources are  available to support activities that help accelerate efforts to achieve our equity and inclusion goals,  with the full backing of the university.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a doctorate in an engineering discipline or a related field by the start date  of the position. We seek faculty candidates who are committed to innovative undergraduate  engineering education and whose research and scholarship will contribute to interdisciplinary  research and enable cross-campus collaborations with other departments within and outside of the  Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, including the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and  Society (https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/centers/schiller-institute). Successful candidates will have a  notable scientific publication record, leadership experience in past and current research projects,  creative research and teaching plans, and will be committed to creating inclusive and equitable  learning opportunities for all students.

Application Instructions

Applicants should submit the following documents at https://apply.interfolio.com/113684: a  cover letter, curriculum vitae (CV), a statement of research directions that includes a one-page  written and/or graphical summary, and a statement of teaching philosophy. In their research  directions and teaching statements, applicants should address previous efforts and future plans to  support diversity, equity, and inclusion in their professional activities. Applicants should identify  their principal area(s) of research (within the broad areas of environment and energy) in the cover letter.

Candidates must include the names and contact information of three referees in the cover letter  submitted via the online faculty application system. Referees do not have to upload letters at this  time, and will be contacted if required. The positions are open until filled, but candidates  submitting materials on or prior to 15 November 2022 will be given full consideration.
