Location: Warton

Duration: 12 Months

Rate: £32.39 p/h PAYE + holiday Pay or £43.05 p/h Umbrella, Inside IR35

Job Description

The job holder will be required to contribute to the smooth running of the Wind Tunnels by applying practical engineering skills and engineering knowledge to lead engineering tasks to fulfil Wind Tunnel test programme objectives. This will ultimately involve the co-ordination, planning, test integration, set up and operation of the Wind Tunnel Facilities and rigs.

Key activities associated with this role will be; to lead test tasks to ensure programmes are completed safely and efficiently on time, within budget and to the necessary quality standards in addition to liaison with the customer on technical aspects, to support testing activities including data acquisition / release and test reporting.

The role will involve supporting and playing an active role in a team responsible for delivering WT engineering tasks, mainly supporting aircraft design & development, capability sustainment and research & development.

The primary role will involve the use of specialised equipment (tools, test equipment, software packages, etc) and application of appropriate tools and techniques to support all aspects of tasks within Wind Tunnels. Training will be provided in these specialist tools and techniques.

Good communication skills are required at all levels - exchange of factual information, providing advice & explanations and persuading or influencing others on the basis of firm, supportive evidence. Interaction with others outside of the Air Sector is also required with customers, partners and suppliers. In addition, creative thinking and problem solving will be required to address the complex and unique issues encountered in the development and maturation of WT technology, tools and processes.

Ideally the candidate will have experience in one of the following:

• Mechanical Engineering

• Aerodynamics

• Systems Engineering

• Operating test equipment / test facilities

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to perform tasks suitable to the internal level of this role. The role will contain, but will not be limited to, the following:
  • Supporting and/or leading your team in the delivery of the team objectives in accordance with time, cost and quality.
  • Supporting and/or leading design and development of our products using Aerodynamic modelling / measurement techniques
  • Support and/or leading the maintainance and development of our capabilities (e.g. test facilties, infrastructure and toolsets)
  • Supporting and/or leading the specification and procurement of new or replacement capabilities.
  • Support and/or lead the provision of specialist advice to the wider BAE Systems business.

Your skills and qualifications:
  • Additional relevant knowledge and product expertise can offset the normal qualification requirements.
  • You should be familiar with the overall systems engineering lifecycle
  • You should possess a strong aptitude for technical problem-solving and decision-making.
  • It is desirable that you will be familiar with IT Tools e.g. CAD systems, control software.
  • It is desirable you are familiar with Aerodynamic principles.
  • An understanding of general theories and applications of Aerodynamic principles along with familiarity with some or all of the following is highly desirable - Systems Engineering, Design Engineering, Airframe Engineering, IT/Computing, Project Management.
  • Must have excellent skills in MS Office Packages, Test engineering, Aerodynamic knowledge, Engineering Management and Wind Tunnel Test Techniques, Facilities, Rigs.

Additional information

Due to the sensitive nature of the product all applicants must have worked within the Defence / Military industry within the last 12 months or be capable of obtaining Security Clearance (SC level minimum).
